This post will be updated as we find out more.
Well that was unexpected, Valve and HTC have announced a joint venture at the Mobile World Congress! Introducing the HTC Re Vive headset.
See the announcement trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTITJSSRUso
It sounds like it will be one hell of a device, with masses of sensors and all kinds of gizmos included.
Some specs
- It will use the SteamVR platform
- Refresh rate of 90FPS (do they mean HZ?)
- A gyrosensor, accelerometer, and laser position sensor
- A nice resolution of 1200x1080 per eye
- A headphone jack to use your favourite headphones
- Special controllers to use with it
- Optional Steam VR base stations to track your movements around a room and more!
They don't seem to have show off the controllers they mentioned yet, and our previous image was wrong.
It seems a number of developers are already signed up to create games and other experiences for it.
As for when we can get one, we don't have too long to wait, as you should be able to order one yourself before 2015 is over.
Pretty interesting news, and it’s one less thing to formally announce at GDC next week. They will be showing it off at GDC next week, and you can request an appointment with them here.

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
Are those actually laser sensors all over the HMD ?
One would get excellent positional tracking with this, but I guess it's really hard to use (from a SDK-maker perspective), even more if we take into account that these sensors are asymmetrically positioned.
Good work, valve (HTC too) !
I fear the price announcement, though.

Cool, Valve + HTC that should deliver some quality. Strange that its revealed just hours before GDC.

That's a serious resolution and frame rate. I'm slightly worried about the price on this baby - cause I just know I'll get me one.

Quoting: liamdaweHere’s a shot of the controller designThat's just a side view of the headset.
Quoting: liamdawe- Refresh rate of 90FPS (do they mean HZ?)Yes, they say 90Hz in the launch video.
Quoting: liamdawe- A nice resolution of 1200x1080 per eyeBut still on the low end — on the plus side current gen video card should be able to handle it. :)
It's also a narrower aspect ratio than I'd have expected.
