Quoting: Phlebiac(I think there was some console platform where there was a specific model of DVD drive that would be able to properly read them, but I don't remember details.)
You remember correctly - that was the Sega Dreamcast's "GD-ROM" format.

Then 6DoF games like Descent must make you vomit uncontrollably!
Hahahahahaha! I'd imagine so! Oddly, I have zero issue with that in flight games/sequences (something which I enjoy), as long as the view is third-person.

These lists always seem like a testament to the flexibility of portable devices - especially ones that can be docked and used with a television or monitor. It'll be interesting to see what appears on them throughout the coming year.

QuoteWhat have you been playing over the last month on either Steam Deck or your Linux desktop?
I rang in the New Year by revisiting Bomberman '94 (PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16*), which is one of my favourite games in the series and one which best encapsulates what it's all about (it's also the most re-released one, as a result). Bomberman is my favourite video game series, and 2023 marks its 40th anniversary, so this felt like the perfect start, and I'm really looking forward to what's ahead - I'm hoping that it won't be too long before I log onto GOL one day and see a report that the upcoming Super Bomberman R 2 has been Steam Deck Verified, since it would be a very good fit for the system.

*The English version is Mega Bomberman (Mega Drive/Genesis), though it has a bit of a butchered soundtrack compared to the original.

I've also been slowly chipping away at Doom (1993) (via Proton) for the first time ever - the vast majority of first-person games give me terrible motion-sickness, but after getting Steam keys for this, Doom 64, and Doom (2016) in some Fanatical mystery-bundles during the winter, I discovered that, played a stage or two at a time on a handheld (my trusty GPD Win Max 2021, in this case) on the default settings, I can play them and not get ill. FPSes are far from my favourite genre (the only one I could ever play without issues was GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64), but I've been having a good time experiencing something iconic that's more-or-less completely new to me!

On the "endless" front, I've been continuing to enjoy Vampire Survivors (Proton - I'll use the native version when it's ready), Pac-Man 256 (native), Race The Sun (native), and Bail or Jail (Obakeidoro!) (Proton).

And, last but not least, my most-recently-cleared games have been Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (native), Choplifter (Master System) and Lode Runner (NES).

All of this has been spread across all of my Linux hardware, as listed in my profile.

Forspoken gets an update to improve Steam Deck performance

Quoting: slaapliedjeHaha! Hell yeah! Granted I have enough real hardware these days that I don't really need to emulate.
It's gone the other way for me - I stuck with real hardware for a reeeeeeeally long time (even had a JAMMA cabinet that took up far too much space!), but it does take up an awful lot of room, unfortunately, and at this point I like to keep everything in one place so shifting over to emulation has worked out well. Good times, though!

Quoting: slaapliedjeRecently added a modded Atari 800xl PAL system with a U1mb and VBXE so I can output via SCART to a lovely image to play awesome new games like Albert! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNfWa4CyehE
Ooh, I do love new games for old hardware - always nice to see! (Quick shout-out to Bomberland for the C64, here, because it's really good. )

Quoting: slaapliedjeThis game is one of those that makes me wonder "why don't people just emulate older computers and play the ton of games that came out 10-20 years ago instead of playing this shiny jaunt through shaders and lighting effects?" :P

Quoting: Purple Library GuyHm. This is one of those ones where I can't decide if it's nice that they updated it, or if it will just kind of ruin my nostalgia.
This kind of reminds me of how generations had their own imaginations' versions of what Hobbits looked like, but those who came along after the Hollywood Lord of the Rings movies tend to see them as Elijah Wood with big feet and funny clothes.

Free Minecraft-like game MineClone2 v0.82.0 for Minetest out now

QuoteIf any of my readers play MineClone2 — why do you choose it over Minecraft?
I owned Minecraft back when I had a Nintendo Switch, and over time claimed a lot of freebie DLC items during promotions. At some point or another a bug got introduced that trashed the items that were tied to your account, and the only known workaround to get them back was to log into Minecraft on an Xbox or a Windows installation, neither of which I have or want.

For a game that turned out to not really be my sort of genre, where I sometimes just explore to see what sort of worlds get procedurally generated and what sights I can see, it wasn't worth it at all for me to re-buy it and deal with more of that sort of hassle after I moved my gaming over to Linux, so MineClone2 has been just the ticket for those rare occasions when I get the exploring-blocky-worlds itch.

Looks like a fine example of Blue Sky in Games!

It's nice to see a new rhythm-game, too - the push for HD gaming displays before they were lag-free led to that genre being killed off for a number of years, and it has yet to fully recover.

To be fair, English isn't their native language, though.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyOf course purple, as the superior colour, won. At least one part of the universe is unfolding as it should.
Meanwhile, over in Universe B, Blue Library Guy is saying the same thing about the blue case.
