Feral Interactive are teasing ANOTHER new Linux port

Quoting: rea987This is called PR. If Feral announces whole list of titles that it has been contacted, that would make a shit storm for couple weeks and after that people will forget about them. By doing that, they keep the interest in a certain point which is much better for awareness. People keep wondering and talking about it which is basically free publicity. Got it?

But the thing is i have no idea if you watch it but the linuxgamecast are in regular contact with the guys that do the porting at Feral they seem to always know what games are coming the one thing the podcast confirmed is the software guys find the radar thing really really stupid but its the way the PR team have chosen to go.

If you look at the short list of companies that Feral currently works with and investigate their recent/back catalog, it is no mystery to figure out potential candidates. Some naive fellas keep yelling for Skyrim or GTA but in reality, there are always handful of financially lucrative titles, not more.

Quoting: Comandante ÑoñardoWith Proton doing a good job for the gaming on Linux, Feral really should STOP with these silly things and just announce the games.

An update on the Linux version of We Happy Few

Considering that Windows release of the game is quite broken, don't expect a fully functional Linux client soon.

NVIDIA are working towards better support for NVIDIA Optimus on Linux
16 August 2018 at 7:44 am UTC

Remember the status of AMD drivers on Linux couple years earlier? We were used to hear vague promises like "we are having a big progress, next xorg release will be remarkable, 0,22 FPS difference with previous milestone, etc... Now, we are witnessing a similar attitude and terminology from Nvidia. Sigh...

Nvidia Optimus forces me to downgrade 10 year old ETQW's resolution into 720p and graphical fidelity into bare minimums to get decent framerate that keeps me competitive on Geforce 940m. Not to mention most of standard Nvidia options are unavailable and SDL1.2 titles can get only native desktop resolution unless a third party tool like SDLCL is used.

What are you playing this weekend and what do you think about it?

Quoting: blackmambaWell I haven't even had my morning coffee yet but I guess once that's rectified I'll play some Enemy Territory Quake Wars for a bit and then continue my Elder Scrolls Oblivion playthrough for a bit. I've installed these both recently after completely forgetting I even owned them, things got nostalgic pretty quick lol.

ETQW servers are populated in the evenings of Europe and North America. If you are into competitive action, TAW Clan's public events also offer custom maps which spice things up pretty well. :-)

As a modding freak, I tend to complete my playlist; today finished Half-Life: Edge of Darkness which was short, simple but well made mission. Tonight, I will play hopefully the last Half-Life mod in my playlist; Half-Life: Chronicles - Episode One. Although, it features a .dll library which won't work with native Linux version of the base game, thankfully Xash3D FWGS is able to run Windows mods of Half-Life on Linux natively.

Cool, I will definitely play it once the music is fully implemented. Cause, George Weidman praised its music for being great;

Quoting: ripperDoes this have the same improvements as the Enhanced Edition, i.e. higher resolutions and mouselook?

Yeah, I would like to give this a go but I need proper mouselook feature. Has anyone tried it? I ask it, because the GIF doesn't look like a native mouse look.

Linux game porter Ryan 'Icculus' Gordon is looking for new games to bring to Linux

Well, there needs to be some sort realism and rationalism in terms of Linux port expectations. First of all, there are certain companies that reject to support Linux at all due to financial or contractual reasons. Because of that, forget about ZeniMax, Bethesda and id Software related titles like Skyrim, Doom, Fallout, Wolfenstein, etc... Secondly modern AAA games are the products of 100s (if not 1000s) people's work; even though they are complete and might support some general libraries and APIs like OpenGL, OpenAL, SDL, etc, it takes enormous effort to port and test these by one man. That said, expecting The Witcher 3, GTAV, Far Cry 5 isn't reasonable even slightest; not to mention publishers' tendency to ignore Linux most of the time.

So, here is the resume of Mr. Ryan C. Gordon.

https://icculus.org/resume

It should be beneficial to check his recent "client" ports to Linux in order to find companies open for Linux port proposals.

Night Dive Studios seems to open for any proposal for a long time. My suggestions are;

- Native System Shock: Enhanced Edition
- Native System Shock 2

Some old Loki games that Ryan C. Gordon has already worked on few of them would be nice:

Human Head Studios:

- Rune Classic

Square Enix:

- Deus Ex

Firaxis Games:

- Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

2K Games:

- Railroad Tycoon II

Epic Games occasionally becomes Linux advocate, so that porting or re-porting some of old games would be their interest if right offer presented.

- Native Jazz Jackrabbit
- Jazz Jackrabbit 2
- Unreal
- Unreal 2
- Unreal Tournament
- Unreal Tournament 2004
- Fortnite

Following are the some Linux friendly Linux publishers and their products that I wish to be ported to Linux;

Sega:

- Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 1 (cross-platform multiplayer)
- Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

2K:

- Borderlands
- BioShock
- BioShock 2

LucasArts:

- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
- Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (Classic, 2005)
- Star Wars: Republic Commando
- Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
- Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Mysteries of the Sith

Square Enix:

- Thief
- Thief II: The Metal Age
- Anachronox
- Deus Ex: Invisible War

CD Projekt RED:

- The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

Interplay:

- MDK
- MDK 2
- Kingpin — Life of Crime
- Earthworm Jim
- Earthworm Jim 2

OpenGL to be deprecated in the next macOS release, could mean interesting things for Linux gaming

Quoting: GuestHave to wait and see what they decide to do in future MacOS releases. It's possible they might provide a shim library of some description to emulate, but then they have shown in the past not to really care for backwards compatibility sometimes.

Apple is infamous for unplugging widely used compatibility solutions for the sake of their innovative apps. Remember Rosetta which made possible running PowerPC applications on Intel based Macs? It was discontinued starting with Mac OS X 10.7 all sudden. Everyone was furious and claimed that no one will upgrade to Lion in order to keep their PowerPC software running; but in the end people moved on and Adobe, Autodesk, Microsoft ended up profiting hugely thanks to forced upgrades. Same will surely happen to those who reject to use cloud based software solutions (Creative Cloud, Office 365, etc) in favor of traditional installations.

Gaming has always been an afterthought for Macs but considering the potential software suit upgrades, Apple simply doesn't care at all. Hack, a barely used Macbook Pro in my former work had 20k€ worth Adobe + Microsoft software installed in it; not a single being but me (1h of basic Illustrator edit) even touched those. As many middle sized, poorly managed companies are being constantly rooked that way, imagine the possibilities...

Anyway, as I investigated a bit, if Apple eventually terminates OpenGL in upcoming releases of macOS; MoltenGL and LWJGL might be the only ways to run OpenGL software on Macs. I have no idea, how that would be utilized by users.
