Makes me think of that old game "Chrome".

This also looks exactly like someone just chucked a bunch of plug-in assets together using plug-in code.

Rust is fucking excellent for game dev, and I will choose it over any other language every single time.
The only downsides are;

Some projects such as rust-sdl2, glium, glutin etc, are still a little immature; however, they are absolutely entirely useable right now, and it's pretty darn easy to keep on top of updates and changes.

Learning curve - the fucking borrow checker. But honestly, this is overcome fairly quickly once you understand how it works, and why it works that way. It does seem to lead to better understanding of how to use pointers in other languages and a larger awareness of the problems they can cause too.

The one thing I would love to see from this type of game; is a first release that uses the proc-gen for level gen, and then an add-on/2nd release that includes handcrafted levels.

That, would make my day.

This is absolutely a noticeable improvement on my rig - i3-6100, GTX950.

The difference is I can max out the graphical settings, including using antialiasing, and get a smooth game at 30fps+.
With OGL I had to run without antialiasing, and with a few settings at either medium or high (vs everything at ultra).

I cranked everything to Ultra, turned on anti-aliasing, res 1920x1080.
On an i3-6100, 8gb ram, GTX950, I get 30fps+, never seems to dip below that, and feels smoooooooooth the whole time.

Yes, never dips below 30fps, with *everything* cranked to Ultra, on very entry-level type system.
