Celebrating 6 years since Valve announced Steam Play Proton for Linux

I remember the talk here, not very long before Proton was made, when porting studios were noticeably slowing down after the Steam Machine’s failure to gain momentum and people were calling the end of Linux gaming; how we missed our only chance and now people would write off Linux as a consumer OS for good. It doesn’t feel like 6 years have passed already, and we’ve finally beaten the Mac user share. Incredible gambit by Valve and I’m so glad it paid off.

I couldn’t be much less excited about this. I feel like we’re kind of done with Borderlands and they’re beating a dead horse at this point. I loved BL3’s gameplay the most and the pre-sequel’s use of gravity was refreshing, but story-wise it doesn’t really feel like it’s been going anywhere since BL2 and I couldn’t be bothered to get Wonderlands. Even with a decent story, I don’t need another escapade searching for a vault key and hearing the same running gags from the same characters that have pretty much exhausted their respective tropes. I can just replay one of the others if I feel like shooting stuff.
Unless they do something really amazing gameplay-wise and/or get a fresh cast of characters that don’t suck like BL3’s and an interesting storyline, I’ll probably stick to watching a couple gameplay videos.

Try the demo for The Protagonish, an adventure game where you don't control the adventurer

Quoting: TheSHEEEPOh, for sure. My initial idea was aimed more at a narrative-heavy game, hence my concern. A point-and-click like this might bridge the gap between puzzles and story well enough to make it work satisfyingly :)Quoting: SalvatosMight have to give this a try to see if the approach is fun in practice or ends up feeling like a weird gimmick. My main worry was that it would make the MC less relatable and reduce immersion. It could quite work as a puzzle game.
Often enough, those barely have a MC or hell, even a story, to really immerse you, instead it is more about the puzzles and atmosphere/humor/etc.

Interesting, I’ve toyed with the idea of making a game with a similar concept before (not controlling the protagonist but its environment) but never fleshed it out fully. Might have to give this a try to see if the approach is fun in practice or ends up feeling like a weird gimmick. My main worry was that it would make the MC less relatable and reduce immersion.

Loop Hero is discounted enough now that I’d have my money’s worth even if I never installed it, considering how much time I spent on the demo on Itch when it was still in development.
I picked that up and a non-Linux native game at 50%, a nice little point & click that should be a good late-night distraction during summer vacation.

Quoting: KimyrielleWe will never be able to 100% eliminate hallucination, because that's not how the math works, but reducing it enough is sufficient. Humans hallucinate, too. The AI only needs to be as good as them, not perfect.I'll do you one better: if my field is any indication, the AI doesn't need to be as good as humans, just faster. Then companies can pay a fraction of the humans a fraction of their former salary to review and "adjust as needed" and deliver more output in a fraction of the time. That's a lot of money at stake for the people not actually producing anything.

Quoting: fagnerlnI believe that AI can help, people who can't write a code can use it, people who can't produce art can use it... But of course big companies will use it to reduce the employees numbers. Those developers should have a plan B, create a indie studio and start working on prototypes.Better yet, make an AI consultancy startup ;)

As usual, the goal is not to replace people. It's just a side effect of efficiency.

Quoting: LinasStricter laws surrounding gambling and lotteries. The gist of it is that giveaways past a certain value need to be registered and approved, and many companies prefer not to bother and just exclude Quebec. It’s similar to how you sometimes see exclusions for both Quebec and California in some terms of use, because their laws don’t allow some of the typical bullshit clauses companies like to use (and are allowed to in the rest of the respective countries).Quoting: SalvatosWhat makes Quebec special? For me it sounds like saying Germany, but excluding Bavaria.Quoting: tuubi- Canada (excluding Quebec).Every. Damn. Time.
