Discord announce their Linux client is now officially supported and out of beta
11 January 2017 at 6:04 pm UTC

I'll try it out, but at 200 MB of RAM I'll probably end up going back to the browser client instead since Firefox is always running anyway. On the other hand, I could probably close FF while I play games and keep only Discord open now that I can run it on its own.

Anyway thanks for the heads up, I didn't get any notification that the client was out.

Quoting: natewardawgThanks for the advice, I'll keep it in mind. Do you know of a name of one of these companies?
Comgateway is one such service. I never got around to trying them since they're still too expensive for the kind of items I (would) buy in the US, but I can't imagine they couldn't cut your price down from $1000!

Editorial: A chat about asking developers for a Linux port

QuoteIt has come to my attention recently that some people have been taking a really hard stance against developers who want to gauge interest for a Linux port.

Can you link some examples? I'm not actively reading the Steam forums, so maybe I'm out of the loop?

The discussion in the comments here also seems to go all over the place, touching various issues.
It was a couple articles here on GOL about developers asking for this kind of show of hands. The titles should make them obvious to find if you look at the past few days.

A certain user in a previous article made a particularly cogent point: Linux ports typically get 1-3% of sales across the board. Asking people to raise their hands repeatedly (across multiple games/developers) to show interest is indeed pointless if you can just look at the stats and figure out if that percentage makes it worth it for you. In fact that's a lot more reliable and safe for developers than trying to gauge subjectively whether X number of posts in a Steam forum in a given time frame means sufficient sales to make a port viable.

I don't resent them at all for asking, but it would be more helpful for us to show them figures when we see them asking for a show of interest than to roll our eyes or say "yes please."

'Battle Chasers: Nightwar' is a visually stunning RPG inspired by a comic, that might be released next year

Looks interesting. I don't do JRPGs too often, but I'll keep an eye on this one if it does release on Linux.

Quoting: Tchey5€ a month feels too much for the content of the website, i would pay 1€ or 2€, without premium, only to support "somehow", like i support other websites like general news (not video game related, i mean world news) and other topics.
You can contribute any amount you like as long as you're fine with not getting the "rewards" (which in this case is just a tag under your avatar if I'm not mistaken). For instance you can see (as of now) that out of 196 patrons, only 111 chose the $5 tier - which is the only tier.

I understand that apprehension, and I feel it sometimes too, but one thing to keep in mind is that your credit card provider/bank probably has your back. If for some reason a given company keeps charging you after you've cancelled a subscription, your provider/bank will probably block/revert the transactions for you and possibly blacklist the company if they keep getting complaints. Depends on whom you do business with and your agreements of course, but I know I feel pretty safe with my own credit card.

Last year a hotel in the U.S. charged me then issued a refund for three "cancelled reservations" I had not made in the first place, but by the time they had sorted it out, the fluctuation in exchange rates (I'm in Canada) amounted to me getting shafted for I think $80. The hotel said they couldn't do anything about it because they had refunded the same amount charged (which was true in USD but that doesn't help me). I reported the situation to my credit card provider and they paid me the balance themselves, no questions asked.

Yeah you can definitely pledge and cancel the next month. They send you an e-mail to notify you when your payment goes through, so you can use it as a reminder to cancel at that point. (Just check your notification preferences to make sure, maybe you don't get e-mails by default.)

Worms W.M.D will be getting cross-platform multiplayer, beta starts on Friday
21 November 2016 at 6:48 pm UTC

I've only played it a couple hours since to me Worms has always been about local multiplayer and I rarely get an opportunity to play video games with friends nowadays (we're more into board games), but it has this "updated Worms Armageddon" feel I was looking for and I consider it a long-term investment that we can play once in a while when the stars align.

Quoting: br3n065It is a sequel to 'The Whispered World'...
Thanks for the info! Wasn't a big fan of The Whispered World either, mainly because the main character was kind of trying too hard to be depressed. It hovered awkwardly between amusing and disheartening and got annoying.

Quoting: ziabiceYou can't imagine how much I was disapponted by the Deponia games...
I didn't have as bad an experience with Deponia as a lot of the reviews I've seen (most people seem to take issue with the fact that the protagonist is a jerk and the fourth wall breaking, and neither really bothers me in a game like this), though I did decide not to buy the last one since three games seem quite enough. I did however prefer Memoria, Chains of Satinav and The Night of the Rabbit. It's been too long to pick a favorite but all three are much more serious (without going overboard like Sadwick) and give you a more traditional experience, story-wise, if you're coming from RPGs. Night of the Rabbit got kind of weird around the end but was still a gorgeous game (not just visually), and there was something deeply tragic about Memoria that I can't quite recall but made me decide to buy more Daedalic games almost blindly.
