Sunless Skies is officially out and it's truly an awesome experience

Ack, I just can't get into top down space games. The trailer looks *amazing* and obviously a lot of time and love was put into it, but there's something about this format that drives me nuts...

Steel Rats, a mental-looking 2.5D motorbike combat action game is coming to Linux

I'm generally not a side scrolling kind of guy, but this looks terrific.

Say what one will about AAA titles or lack thereof, but is it my imagination or, in the last several weeks of GOL coverage, does it appear like we're getting an avalanche of fun looking new or significantly updated games? If not for the Steam Wishlist, I'd have trouble keeping track of everything!

Quoting: scaine...you've raise the excellent point that a threat to Steam/Valve is indeed a threat to your carefully horded (and paid-for) steam library. We're just renting those titles (permanently) rather than owning them.

Is Epic running the same gig? Or can you download a DRM-free version of their titles for play without the need for the Epic launcher? Knowing Epic, I'd expect both a forced launcher AND draconian, bullshit DRM on everything.
Outstanding point... Good question about Epic, and I agree with you that given their history, draconian is what we could probably expect on DRM...

Space shooter 'Disputed Space' arrives on Linux offering up intense 3D action

Quoting: tmtvlMan, we need more space sims, X2/3 and Vega Strike alone aren't cutting it for me.
Are you serious, or were you joking ironically, as in, 'that's what the state of the Space Sim was in Linux in, like, 2012 and look how far we've come'? As a big space gamer, I can attest that the the state of the space sim is quite good in Linux right now and we have little out there we can't play. We have:

Native:
Allspace
Arc Savior (coming soon)
Astrokill
Disputed Space
Everspace
Freespace 1 and 2 via Openspace (and its mods like the Battlestar Galactica inspired Diaspora)
Helium Rain
Oolite
Overload (not really space, but I put Descent inspired shooters in this group)
Strike Suit Zero
X2/3/Rebirth (with the amazing X4 coming soon)

Windows titles via Proton or Wine that work:
Angels Fall First
Elite Dangerous
Eve Valkyrie
Executive Assault 2
Void Destroyer 1 and 2
I-War 1 and 2
Landinar Into the Void
House of the Dying Sun
Star Citizen
War Tech Fighters
XWing and XWvsTF classics

And that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. That's most of the recent and past all time genre greats. That's enough space gaming to play as a full time job, if you wished :). The only space title in Windows I can think of that doesn't work on Linux via Proton right now that I desire is Spacebourne (and I plan on reaching out to that dev since it's an Unreal 4 engine game, and most of those should work), that's about it...

Terrific post! All of the salient points clearly and precisely delineated. Well done...

Also, it says New User next to your name. Welcome!

Insurgency: Sandstorm should still release for Linux this year

Apparently single player with poor performance, MP doesn't work due to cheat blockers...

Allspace, a free to play first-person space combat game arrives on Steam in a rather basic form
29 January 2019 at 6:05 pm UTC

Gameplay is very simple right now, yes, but that seems to be what he's aiming for to some degree. And for free with a team based $5 DLC, I'm not sure how much we can expect. I posted some suggestions to the dev on the Steam forum, and he seems really committed to upping the gameplay down the road. I personally think of he adds some countermeasures there, more structures for cover there, and a sprinkling of directional thrusters that would make it a more nuanced play...

Quoting: GuestEpic can buy as many "Exclusives" or timed exclusives as they want. I wont use the Epic Launcher. If i want Metro i just gonna buy it for my Xbox One.
Or better yet, just wait to buy it from Steam. This is the thing: Epic has tons of Fortnite cash and Tencent cash to burn (remember, Tencent is also going at Valve with the Discord Store too!) so they really could be patient and just spend Valve out of existence, which is why it's so important that......

QuoteI'm going to end up sounding like a broken record here, but they need to seriously get back into their own IP.
Absolutely. To their credit, it seems Valve realizes they need to get back into the development game (or if they don't, they'll need to buy their own exclusives in retaliation) rather than kick back and just watch the cash roll in. They also need to double down on social/chat/voice to maximize the value of everyone having extensive friends lists here, and also need to push on home and over-the-web game streaming before Google/Sony/Amazon eat their lunch here. If all Valve does in 2019 is refresh the launcher, it will seriously have been a lost year. This is the critical time. Proton is great, but it's developing their own IP, streaming, and social that will save them...

Quoting: eldakingAll the while, Epic is trying to "compete" in the least competitive way possible - by removing consumer choice and using its resources to push publishers/developers into exclusive deals where they can't sell their products anywhere else.
No one, including Epic, has ever claimed these moves were better for the customer. No, this looks like the worst kind of "competition," where the business plan is to "dump" product at a probable loss to undersell the market leader into extinction and then do whatever you want with the monopoly you end up building...

Ranked "Gold" on ProtonDB. Thanks Valve!
