HORI Steam Controller releases in the USA in December
7 November 2024 at 10:51 am UTC Likes: 3

This isn't going to replace my aging Steam Controller if it doesn't have the all-important Trackpads. This looks like, for all intents and purposes, an XBOX Controller with the Steam logo on it, with some extra doodads that I don't know that I care about, but without the stuff that I do know that I care about it. I'm going to pass on that.

Last Epoch drops the Native Linux version, devs tell players to use Proton

Well, I'm mad about this. I bought this based on there being native support. They took that away. Also, there are plenty of people who have horrid performance on Proton, no matter which version they try. I, for one, don't even want to try. If they've been having problems with maintaining the Linux version under Unity, they obviously need help. But dropping it altogether without warning just isn't honest.

Microsoft's new Recall AI will take screenshots of everything you do - freaky

I'm sure every authoritarian government on Earth will be demanding access to these screenshots. And Microsoft will probably agree to make it so that Recall will be sending those governments that data. As long as Microsoft doesn't explicitly profit from that, they can still be honest to say that they aren't selling it.

Factorio devs detail their 'Linux adventures' in a new blog post

One thing that I think might be worth noting is that he also mentioned that there is a hidden feature of Asynchronous Saving that only works on Mac/Linux but not on Windows. It's hidden in the options menu (look at the FFF for more info). But he wants to promote it out of the hidden status for 2.0 and needs for us to test it. He'd like us to reproduce a seemingly random freeze at the last stage of the process. I'm sure if that can be fixed, we'll have something nice to flex on the Windows-users about in 2.0.

Also, keep your filthy hands off Nintendo. And everything that you haven't extinguished yet.

Tencent now own majority stake in Don't Starve and Oxygen Not Included creator Klei

This is very worrying. Tencent is directly under control of the CCP. And I used to have a very high amount of respect for Klei, too. But as long as Tencent has a controlling interest, I don't think it's wise to have their software running on my computer. Heck. I wasn't even aware that Klei was publicly traded.

Facebook announces their own Cloud Gaming service

Perhaps. I'm just getting really rankled by all the hype that cloud gaming is getting, and like some others here, I want absolutely nothing to do with it. Last night, I read something about the United Nations having a plan for their Agenda 21 that by the year 2030, they'll have it that governments and major corporations will own everything. And the rest of us will be relegated to services or rentals. What does this mean for gaming? It means EVERYTHING will be cloud exclusive if they have their way. And the days of us having agency of our own hardware will be over. This is the kind of future that I dread, and every single positive article about cloud gaming getting bigger and better seems to be cheering on this agenda. It hurts so much to hear about it this way.

Facebook announces their own Cloud Gaming service

Why did you think that we would be receptive to this? Is it simply because it's gaming that can be done from a Linux installation? It's not running ON our Linux installations, it's running on remote servers which may or may not be running Linux. But even if it does, so what? It takes away the freedom and agency that we get from Linux. All that's relevant to this is just the kernel. And if that's all you care about for this, I guess that's that. Looks like most of the people commenting here really care about the freedom that Linux provides. And that precludes not only Facebook but all the cloud gaming services. We want to play games ON OUR computers, not on remote servers owned by corporations who are only beholden to special interests who might be hostile to some of us. And if you think that this is going to lead to these games being made available to us on our Linux computers in the future, that's some optimism that I'd like to get behind, but it's starting to look like that's not in the cards. The best thing that we can do is to wash our hands of cloud gaming altogether, bolster our numbers and use the numbers to get more and more indie and the occasional AAA devs to support us directly.

AMD reveals Zen 3 and the Ryzen 5000 series - out November 5

I've been on my FX-6300 for what will be 6 years come November. I'm eyeing the 5900X for my next build, but I won't be able to afford it until December. At that time, I'm bracing for the Zen3 to be about as easy to buy as an RTX 3080. I just want to know if Big Navi is going to have the PS5/Ampere's ability to draw data directly from the GPU. It might not be my only factor for choosing what I go with, but it's going to go a long way.
