Operations winding down

By -
Well there comes a time when all good things come to an end, this day it's me participating on the website posting gaming news directly.

Rustybolts has known my thoughts for some time as i've been unsure about the website for some time now (i've vented on him all too many times). Also out of my growing frustration about Linux, desktop environments, hardware support etc a lot of issues I always seem to have.

Add to that my time nowadays for me is better spent actually gaming rather than scouring the net for Linux gaming related news, now I have a family my winding down time is needed more than ever and constantly tinkering with Linux to get stuff to work just isn't for me right now.

I will always be a Linux fan and user (I will be keeping a partition open for it ready for the day my very odd type of nvidia Optimus is supported - it's not the usual type that The Bumblebee Project works with).

The website and Linux for me have always been a hobby, I will continue to Admin behind the scenes.

If you are interested in writing for us helping out send me a PM. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I'm keen to be around and continue posting stuff, but I'm too busy to guarantee a lot of commitment.
I'm happy to support whomever is holding the reins in any way I can (Liam, have you considered the idea of running the show without posting news - being an editor/overseer as it were?).

I am happy to continue paying for and updating the site software itself etc but it needs editors to continue the website going.

http://www.happypenguin.org/ allows users to submit updates.
But I also check GOL, because any site seem to miss a few updates ...

Where DO you find your updates ?
And the other question is: why aren't they submitting them itself ?

Maybe that's a smarter path ?

I find my updates from reddit, other gaming webstes, game websites directly and people directly email them.

I cannot update my nvidia drivers from an official driver download as using Optimus the official installers don't install on Linux as it's not the main card (the current available 295 series thats via a .deb don't support my card, the 302 unstable series don't work and the guys from the bumblebee project where no help blaming the drivers, so I literally have no choice).

Also to add to it because of my hardware my desktop will freeze constantly, sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes it can be an hour, no explainable reason either - pretty sure it's a driver issue that will be ironed out (i had the same thing a couple years back on my old but new at the time pc) so that's another reason I have to now use Windows.

noooooooooooooooooo :(

thank you for all your hard work Liamdawe, really sad to see you go though and hope there is someone who has the time to take over.

Optimus sucks, see "The finger" on Slashdot recently :)
Options usually:

      Don't by Optimus laptops
Use a OS NVidia cares to support
(I can't bare Windows, so not an option for me.)
Make sure you buy a laptop capable of switching between your intergrated and your Nvidia card
(mine has this, and this is OK for me.)
      Don't buy a laptop.
(I didn't buy my laptop for gaming.)

(I can't switch without rebooting, but I'll live.)

I think you can buy laptop with Nvidia graphic card (without Optimus):

I think there's still a moderation aspect to it, though. I submitted my update about Dirk Dashing 2 v0.9.2, and it still hasn't been posted. Doesn't look like the main page has been updated in 3 weeks.

We'll miss you, Liam. Thanks for starting this site. Hope someone takes over and keeps it going.

That said, I think it was a good move for you to allow developers to post their news and have it show up directly on the home page. That must have decreased your work load a little bit, since you didn't have to copy and paste developers' e-mails and create the news articles yourself. And devs get to share their news immediately.

T510 W520 can switch between Intel and Nvidia in bios (or Optimus), has some limitations to output ports though.

My laptop has no bios setting at all for Optimus the bios seems quite limited :(

I shall be watching from the side line hoping to see some progress on the Optimus front and keeping a Linux partition open. I will probably install Ubuntu 12.10 and keep up to date I'm hoping it will fix my hard lock up problems too - i really want that to go away as I like to develop websites on Linux as it has everything I need so easily :(

Hamish has also kindly joined the team to hopefully do reviews (was a long time coming we looked into a couple different mods for the forum but none do the job).

If anyone else would like to be able to post news please let me know, any help while I am playing a waiting game would be awesome.

That's one thing about running Linux. Having questionable hardware vendor support means you really have to research before you buy (it's hard to argue that that's a negative thing anyway, though - it's always good to be aware of what you're getting).
