Steam can be legally packaged in any distro

Thanks to a recent (7th Feb) update to the Steam Linux client, it is now possible for it to be packaged for other Linux distro's.

Changelog
All Platforms:
- Added third party Mod support for games on new content system
- Fix screenshots sometimes not showing up in screenshot manager when copied from another Steam installation

Linux:
- Fix executable file system check bug when installing games
- Fix runtime crashes in libappindicator, XCreateIC
- Fix launching Steam with STEAM_RUNTIME=0
- Fix problem connecting to X11 display when XAUTHLOCALHOSTNAME is set
- Reduced the size of the Steam Runtime by 50%
- Added license to allow repackaging for other Linux distributions

It's great to see them do this, it makes business sense for them to allow it to reach as many people as possible. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I've had so much trouble with the Steam client through PoL.  I don't understand if there really is a difference between using PoL (or just WINE in general) and using the native client.  Does the native client still leverage WINE to run or is it really "native"?

Anyone tried the native client?

PoL is Play on Linux, a wine frontend.

The native steam client is just that... native. Has nothing to do with wine.

The relevant info for anybody who's looking for it (sourced from Steam/steam_install_agreement.txt):

Quote       B. Limited Redistribution License.  Valve hereby grants, and you accept, a limited, terminable, non-exclusive license to reproduce and distribute an unlimited number of copies of
the Program; provided that the following conditions are met:
        (i) you must distribute the Program in its entirety;

        (ii) you may not modify the Program, except that, in the case of the Linux version of the Program, you may modify scripts and other documentary and graphical files, but not any f
iles containing the term “bootstrap” in the file name, provided that you do not modify any icons, change any copyright or other notices, or alter this or any other license agreement that

        (iii) you may repackage the Program and distribute it with another software program, provided that you do not integrate the Program in any way with that other software program, o

Kurremkarmerruk: The native client can only download/launch/update native games. The Windows client can only download/launch/update non-native games. You can generally assume that you'll get better performance/stability out of a native title than one run through Wine :)

am still running it 100% local in my ~/Steam, still prefer that to any package via packagemanager

Wow, I guess I didn't put to much effort into looking but the download site for Steam basically stated "oh you can download it here native client style, or you can use PoL." I will give that a go then! I suppose I've just been too lazy to try ;)
