So as usual Steam has published their monthly user statistics and it's looking ever better for Linux! We're now over 2%.

Linux Stats

  • Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit 0.71% +0.28%
  • Ubuntu 12.10 0.38% +0.19%
  • Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS 64 bit 0.31% +0.31%
  • Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS 0.20% +0.20%
  • Linux Mint 14 Nadia 64 bit 0.17% +0.17%
  • Linux 64 bit 0.14% +0.14%
  • Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64 bit 0.11% -0.22%

Total: 2.02%

Last Month Linux Stats

  • Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64 bit 0.33% +0.07%
  • Ubuntu 12.10 0.19% +0.07%
  • Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 0.17% +0.04%
  • Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit 0.43% +0.14%

Total: 1.12%

So Linux's market share on Steam has risen 0.9% in the space of one month.

This is leaving out "Other 0.82% +0.06%" as I don't like to include it and assume it is Linux when it could be a mix of other things, but even that is higher as well.

Considering Mac has a total of 3.07% this is welcome news since going by these stats we really aren't far behind them at all.

They have added "Linux 64 bit" and Linux Mint 14 Nadia 64bit into this months official stats too. I hope "Linux 64 bit" counts all other distro's and if so I hope they do this for 32 bit as well soon so we can get an even more accurate public measure for Steam.

My Guess is we make up at least 80% of other. But no real way to know for sure.

Keep in mind that many people just used virtual machines to get tux in tf2
next month the numbers might be lower
Anon Mar 1, 2013
I'd expect it to fall slightly next month, but it'll probably still be above 1.5%
I hope they put in a Linux tab at that point, so we can see more detailed info.

That's not how it works. You're only counted for this if you're asked to participate in the survey. So unless they ran a Linux VM to get a tux and then accepted and took the survey in said VM... it shouldn't drop at all.

That's 80% growth month over month. By this rate Linux will have easily passed Mac around the middle of the year.

Not really. Assuming the Mac share doesn't change significantly, with another 80% growth we would already pass them before the end of this month. :)

And this is without DOTA2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Left 4 Dead 2 i.e. the Valve games that are not yet out for Linux and have considerably more players a day than any other Valve games. Once those hit, we should see another increase. I cannot wait! Go Linux!

LINUX WILL DOMINATE THE WORLD! :D :D
s_d Mar 2, 2013
World domination is great and all, but honestly, I'll be satisfied just being taken seriously... let's hope that's where this is all going ;)
Sabun Mar 2, 2013
This is awesome news :)

Indeed I hope the same at least Valve is taking us seriously!

Those ARE nice stats to look at, and I agree with all your sentiments Dawe.

still not many games not available on linux. Number might increase as the list grows.

Games attract people but games don't come with out the people...
