Welcome to the The Cheapskates' Corner. If last week we haven't a single new bundle and many of them had finished, this time around it's quite the opposite: except for the Get Loaded 72-hour and IndieGameStand's Zigfrak deals, no last week's bundles or massive sales have finished yet. And then we have a great new bundle on our hands (you all know which one I'm talking about :P) and there're a couple of things to look forward to in the following days.

image

image

The biggest news is, of course, the new Humble Indie Bundle 8. It arrives more than 5 months after the previous one, a dry spell between HIBs never experienced since the epic HIBV (although there's been the Humble Bundle Mojam 2, the Humble Bundle with Android 5 and the recent Humble Double Fine Bundle, so we can't hardly complain after all).

We covered its launch in an article yesterday, so we're not going to elaborate any further. Let's recap this bundle's content instead (*): pay what you want for Dear Esther, Thomas Was Alone, Capsized, Awesomenauts and Little Inferno:

image image image image image

Beat the average (currently around $5.50~$5.75) to also get Proteus and Hotline Miami:

image image

It's worth noting that, with the exception of Proteus, the rest of the games are debuting on Linux thanks to this bundle. As we said, it started yesterday, so there's still 13 days to go in which we hope some more games get added to the current ones. We'll keep you duly informed on this respect.

(*) All games come with a soundtrack except for Hotline Miami, which can be listened to at SoundCloud.

image

We mentioned at the beginning of this column that, with minor exceptions, no bundle featured on the last edition has finished yet. So we proceed to review them all in case you forgot about any of them.

Groupee's Be Mine 8, was extended by a week so you still can get it until next Tuesday. Its Linux content is, by now, Paranautical Activity (which happened to work fine after all :P) for $1 and Constant C, which is allegedly being ported to Linux, for $5.

image image

The main reason for extending the bundle was the inclusion of a mysterious and purportedly awesome new bonus game. They're teasing us with new hints everyday, all 7 of which have been revealed:

· Clue 1: Steam game, with a Meta of 70 or more

· Clue 2: Light
· Clue 3: Will
· Clue 4: Man?
· Clue 5: “Indie”
· Clue 6: New old school
· Clue 7: 2D or not 2D…

There are also «graphical hints» in the form of a sort of game cover:

We think it must be a non-Linux game because we cannot fit the clues to any Steam Linux game that we know. Any ideas?

UPDATE: The «awesome mystery game» has finally been revealed and unlocked: Primordia. We were right in that there's not a native Linux version, but the game can be played using the AGS Linux port. :)

image

Get it along with Paranautical Activity, a bunch of other non-Linux games and some music for $1. This deal will last until Tuesday/Wednesday (depending on your time zome).

Shinyloot's Key Indie Sale is about to end. Only 8 hours remain at the time of publishing, so you'd better be extra quick if you want to snatch one of these indie games. Added at the last minute to the sale is Ostrich Island, a nice-looking 3D puzzle-platformer. We've added it to the full gallery of Linux games on sale at Shinyloot:

image image image image image image image image image image image image image image image image image

And remember that there's also a bundle mixed in with all these sales: the Universal OS Bundle, which includes the following games:

UPDATE

All those sales already ended.

And just like Shinyloot's sales are about to end, so is The Bitcoin Bundle, with barely one day left. Remember that this bundle was conceived as a way of promoting bitcoins and so they're the only currency accepted. It includes these classic indie games:

UPDATE

Contrary to what we were saying yesterday,
this bundle's duration has been extended.
It will last for 5 more days, till next Wednesday.

To finish the What's Happening? roundup we'd like to highlight a pair of deals, one from Desura and another from Steam:

image

On Desura you can find the newly released Rise of the Ravager, the latest game to come out of Gentleman Squid Studio, with whom we offered you a detailed interview.

image

You can buy it here at 40% off during the next 48 hours. In all fairness we must say that it's also available on Gameolith, but as far as we know you only get a DRM-free copy and no Desura key there.

image

Steam's current Linux Midweek Madness is featuring Crusader Kings II and many of its DLCs:

image

Get the game, the DLCs or both of them at 75% off. Be quick, as this deal ends in about 24 hours!

And finally, let's speculate about what the next days could bring us.

Indiebundle.org has announced a new bundle for this Friday called Perilous Puzzle Bundle, in which we can expect some puzzle games, obviously. Let's hope this one includes some Linux games, unlike the rest of the current ones (yeah, we know, The Hellish Dungeons Bundle includes Dark Gates, but it's on the Bundle+ $7 tier which renders the game more expensive than buying it elsewhere at full price). We'll know for sure on Friday.

$ $ $ $ $ $ $

UPDATE

$ $ $ $ $ $ $

No need to wait until Friday as the new bundle is already out and accessible, although not directly from Indiebundle.org's main page. Instead you've got to guess the URL, but this has proven not a particularly big challenge since it is: http://indiebundle.org/perilous-puzzle-bundle/.

If you click the previous link to the bundle you'll be agreeably surprised to find two-and-a-half Linux games in it. What do you mean, 2½ games? We mean that there's
Hairy Tales at the regular $5 level and Wyv and Keep at the Bundle+ $7 level:

image image

But at the basic level there's also Great Permutator, a game that sooner or later will be available for Linux:

image

So there you have, pay $7 and get 2 games very recently released for Linux and another one that might be coming soon.

The current Windows-only Humble Weekly Sale ends in less than 24h. Will they continue doing them? Even with a big bundle going on? And will the new sale feature any Linux games? That would be awesome, and the answer to all these questions will be revealed by tomorrow. Be alert!

$ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $

UPDATE

Well, the answers to our questions turned out to be
«Yes», «Yes» and «No», respectively. This means
there's a new Humble Weekly Sale going on, but its
featured games are for Windows and Mac only.
:(

And if we hadn't enough stuff to chew on, a new Bundle In A Box was announced out of the blue today. This particular one is called The Capsule Computers Indie Bundle and its actual Linux content isn't particularly breathtaking. There's Hacker Evolution Untold for the minimum price of $1.99 and also Hacker Evolution Duality if beating the average which is currently around $4:

image image

But if you are of the look-ahead kind of people, you might find this bundle more attractive when taking into account that most of the rest of the games might come someday to Linux:

· Firstly there's Super Tower Rush and Pixelry, the developers of which have both manifested their wish to port them to Linux at some point (maybe Pixelry is less likely after its failed Kickstarter campaign, in which Linux support was included as a stretch goal).

· And secondly the bundle also includes the 4 titles in Wadjet Eye Games' Blackwell saga. It's not that anybody said anything about releasing Linux ports of these particular games, but at least we know the company isn't opposed to the idea since they are working on a Gemini Rue Linux version. So who knows? They aren't likely to be released natively for Linux any time soon, but eventually they might end up coming after all. So even if you already own the Hacker Evolution games or don't want them, you can think about purchasing this bundle as a sort of gamble. :P

$ $ $ $ $ $ $

UPDATE

$ $ $ $ $ $ $

No need to gamble after all! We've realized that all the games from Wadjet Eye are built with the Adventure Game Studio runtime interpreter, which has a Linux port. So all those game CAN be played natively on Linux if you own the original game assets:

image image image image

Get them, along with Hacker Evolution Untold, for the ridiculous price of $1.99.

UPDATE

Turns out that Secret of the Magic Crystals is available for Linux on Steam:

image

This one is a beat-the-average game, so you can get it along with Hacker Evolution Duality for around $4.

And that was all, folks! See you next week with hopefully even more deals, and don't forget to keep up-to-date with our Game Sales page. Adieu! ;) Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Excellent coverage, as always Munt!  Thanks :)

Hahaha, the Be Mine 8 mystery game tactic they've employed really made me chuckle. Love the idea, even if it's not a Linux game. HumbleBundle 8 is awesome in my opinion, love Hotline Miami. Thanks for continuing my favourite corner muntdefems :P

The DRM-Free version of Hotline Miami works pretty smoothly on Ubuntu 13.04. It actually works better than the Windows one (Windows-version crashes constantly and won't stretch to my entire screen resolution). So far Awesomenauts still has some issues. Can't join others because the game will crash. Can play practice modes though. For the Be Mine 8 bundle, most of the games work in Wine no problem from my testing which is pretty cool. Ah, so many games and so little time.

Updated the article again to include both the recently disclosed Groupees Be Mine 8 mystery bonus game and the realization that the current Bundle In A Box offers more bang than we thought.
