The Chaos Engine is a top down shooter that was originally on Amiga, it is being revamped to work on modern computers but it is basically a full recreation.
This one is close to my heart, sunk a lot of hours into it on my old Amiga 600 (or was it my 1200?) when I was younger so I am looking forward to having one working well without emulation on Linux!
About
Prepare for the dark world of The Chaos Engine, a steampunk Victorian age in which one or two players must battle the hostile creations of the Chaos Engine across four dynamic landscapes and take part in the ultimate battle.
Choose from six hard-nailed mercenaries each with their own unique weapons and skills.
Those who have the strength and skill to overturn the Chaos Engine will be remembered.
Interview with Eurogamer that shows gameplay
As usual gamers are complaining about it being a remake and not really changing it, is that a problem? I think not, to have a fully working (and supported!) game that requires no emulation is great, especially when it's a game as awesome as this one.
You can pre-order for £6.99 from getgamesgo which gives you a Steam key, seems it will be Steam only.

Actually nearly all the games on Steam for Linux can be run directly from the folder without using steam at all. So most really are DRM free

yeah! can't wait to get my hands on this gem! In the good old amiga days I prefered the ecs version over the aga/cd32 version
as the color palette was better chosen imho.
One time my wife and me made it together to the engine. unfortunately I had to beat it alone then :)
Maybe one day we even see other classics like gods or ambermoon on linux without uae (fs-uae rocks anyway)
lionheart rocked too, which at least has a java & opensource rewrite here:

So the only new feature will be that it requires Steam? I'm better using the emulation.
I would try Steam and maybe buy DRM-free games if they truly exist, but I still can't run it. When Valve said they would target Ubuntu they meant making sure it wouldn't run easily anywhere else.

I know they are trying to fix things and I guess that some day it will work effortlessly. Maybe next time I try...
The video mentions several things - they're keeping the core game as it is, but things like online multiplayer (2 person co-op), some graphical improvements, and more things are being done. They also mentioned wanting to allow steamworks support so people can make their own levels, etc.
But it will be the original game at its core. The video shows gameplay footage. Really, go watch and listen to the video.
It'd be nice if they could bring it Steam, Desura, and stand-alone, but I guess I can understand things from their point of view.
Also, no probems running Steam on two Gentoo boxes here (without pulseaudio) - what distro are you running?
Sorry, I relied solely on the article and that's what I understood.
Maybe if I tried hard enough it could work but the question is why should I try so hard when there's already a ton of games working smoothly? No problem really, it's just that I understood the only enhancement would be the Steam requirement.

Now this looks nice. No need to be changing gameplay or much else of anything - just update the code a little bit, bring it to modern systems.Used to absolutely love that game in the old days. Compared to PC's at the time, The Amiga blew everything else away.
Remember playing it on the A500 - definitely going to grab this, though I'll wait until it's actually released. Hope it does well enough to bring Chaos Engine 2 along for the ride as well.
Like you I had the A500, but saved up for the 600.
