Here is the latest instalment of Steam's Hardware Survey, as usual we do our monthly thing and compare it and talk about it and make sure you know not to use it as a hard figure.

Linux results for July 2013
Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit 0.43% +0.03%
Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS 64 bit 0.20% +0.02%
Ubuntu 13.04 0.13% +0.01%
Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS 0.11% +0.01%
Linux 64 bit 0.10% +0.01%
Linux Mint 15 Olivia 64 bit 0.09% +0.02%

Total: 1.06%
Last Month: 1.07%

My thoughts on it
So down by 0.01% this month, far less of a drop than before. Looks like it is levelling out and so who knows August could show a small rise at this rate, one can hope anyway.

Things to note
The Other category may contain a few of the smaller Linux distro's like Fedora, Gentoo and Arch for example.

Other 0.73% +0.16%

Especially when before the main stats did contain quite a few more Linux distro's it's safe to assume some of the % is Linux as well.

Just be aware these results will probably not be that accurate as we don't know how they do their percentage results, they could be rounding up, rounding down or truncating the percentages. So a 0.5% could actually be nearly 0.6% as it could be 0.59% but they could do no rounding and simply truncate it.

Also it won't be every Steam user (it's a survey not a full statistic) so it can be as simple as not actually showing the survey to many Linux people. Let's face it we know they don't survey 100% of their user base, only a small fraction of it, so bear that in mind as well. Personally I am still yet to see it under Linux so it's not counting me that's for sure and I am logged in every day!

Also to note is that Linux is apparently only sitting at around 1.28% of the worldwide desktop share anyway according to Net Applications. Their reporting should also be taken lightly too since it's all using web-based counters.

Lastly Linux users typically shy away from any form of DRM, so you can bet there is a large bunch of Linux users who just simply refuse to use Steam. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I still take this with a grain of very big salt. I have SforLinux running on three rigs, and have yet to be asked.

I constantly switch between various Steam installs from my Crossover bottles and the native Steam client. One more than one occasion I got a survey while I was running the windows client in wine. Guess it falls into "Others" then.

Where do we lose 0,01%? Here in "Linux results" I see only plus signs

Guys, this survey and its results presented as "stats" have no real value. http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/864975026741996257/

As some people said already, I log in on Steam everyday too and since I got part of the Beta until now I was never asked to respond this survey, but, when using Wine, I was asked several times, I think this numbers are good to have some ideas but they can´t be taken as "the final word".

For what it's worth, yesterday night I was asked to answer the survey. Me, that I don't add up to more than an hour of playing time since last november... Anyway, you must count me under the 'Other' category as I run Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit, so there's definitely Linux users there.

PS: I don't know whether my data counted towards the July report or next month...

That means nothing, you should always wait a bit for the stats to finalise which is why I held off for a good few hours.

What do you expect if we are not getting AAA games? I've not used steam for the last 2 weeks since there is nothing of valor to buy.

I've only had the survey pop up on Windows.  When it did, I logged out and into Linux and it wouldn't show up.  I agree with the others that said the survey doesn't have alot of value.

I am on my linux partition about 90% of the time, Steam is always running and I still have not gotten it this entire year.

I never received a prompt to participate in the Steam survey on either Windows back in the day or Linux in the present.
tuxlabor Aug 3, 2013
the survey did not show up on my Linux steam client, but on my steam on wine installation...
