This is going to be crazy, so far it has been reported that Valve has already signed up 12 manufacturers to create Steam Machines, holy cow!

Here's me thinking we will have 4 or 5 top and engadget has come out with a list of 12 that have apparently signed up to make them:
QuoteThus far, the only third party we know of that's making a Steam Machine is iBuyPower -- today, that all changes. Alienware, Falcon Northwest, iBuyPower, CyberPowerPC, Origin PC, Gigabyte, Materiel.net, Webhallen, Alternate, Next, Zotac and Scan Computers are among the first companies signed on to support Valve's initiative

Source

All should be revealed shortly as CES is only a day away where companies usually announce their new kit. Although Valve actually has a press conference at around 5PM PT (1AM GMT for us brits!) so who knows what could be announced today!

If more boxes come out looking like the iBuyPower one I will be happy, we covered that here for those that missed it.

What are you hoping Valve will announce directly, or do you think it will be a general get excited for Steam Machines kind of thing press talk? Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I was very suprised to se Webhallen among those. Webhallen is a Scandinavian chain of swedish stores and an online shopping site for games, hardware etc. Not one I would put together with new hardware, but I think they might take a chance on this and be a forerunner here in Scandinavia. It's great to be able to buy Steam Machines close by! :D

They are probably just resellers, just like they sell other consoles. But yes, that would be great if we could buy Steam Machines in local stores. Even if they will probably cost more than in the US.

I'm waiting to see the prices and hardware specs to determine whether to build my own or buy a Steam Machine.

Alienware Steam machine? Damn, I do look forward to seeing all of these, dont even need one. Do want though!

Has anyone seen anything anywhere about how companies see the steambox? I wonder if it will have its own category on steam? For instance, I would love to see FIFA 15 on steambox (maybe EA would see it as a console and not a rival).

Time to start pestering EA I think.

Just don't mention Linux. Might cause a severe allergic reaction.

The problem (for EA) is the fact that desktop users would be able to play the game without origin.

Same here, though I really do expect to find at least some of the offerings will be cheaper than building with identical components due to their bulk purchasing power vs retail markups. The Steam Controller bundled in will eat probably at least $50 alone, I'd wager more.

Digital storm. one of the manufacturer has already announced they will make a dual boot machine, so it has windows and steam os and thus they can call it a steam box.  Reality will be that users will probably use windows then to run steam on in big picture mode since all games are supported natively.

Maximum PC magazine did a build of a Linux box to run Steam, with a (I think) AMD 965 4-core, nVidia 650ti, and 4GB RAM. My box is the same, except I have 16GB RAM. Every Steam Linux game runs just fine, and that build is not an expensive build.

I was also suprised to see that. Webhallen is a great store with friendly staff, (at least in Malmö) fast shipping if ordering online and mostly nice prices. Won´t be buying a Steam machine though, since my gaming rig is about 6 months old, and I´m still upgrading it (recently an SSD from Webahllen). Now I know where to get my Steam controller though. :)

As Liam pointed out elsewhere, it shouldn't even qualify as a Steam Machine, considering it is not shipping with SteamOS *or* a Steam Controller... It's just a Windows PC with the Steam Machine label. No Controller, no optimized gaming OS. I'm sorry, but, "well, later on we will put SteamOS on it too, and include a Controller, I guess..." is pretty damn lame. For what reason would they be shipping it this month, as-is, with just Windows on it? It's just stupid and pointless. Why would anyone buy one of these, if they actually want a Steam Machine? There is no reason.

I'm still debating which one I will buy, if I do in fact buy one instead of building one myself. But one thing is for sure: Digital Storm is out, due to their complete lack of commitment to the entire concept of Steam Machines.

Okay, two things are for sure: OriginPC is also out of the running. I'm not buying anything with Windows on it.
