This is completely unconfirmed, but "The Witcher 2 Linux Beta Retail" is now an entry on SteamDB as of today.

About
Thanks to the new, ultra-modern REDengine, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings features both beautiful graphics and sophisticated in-game mechanics, drawing players into the most lively and believable world ever created in a video game.

Defining new standards for realistic, non-linear game narration, The Witcher 2 spins a mature, thought-provoking tale to produce one of the most complex and unique RPGs ever released on consoles. In addition to its epic story, the game features a complex combat system that uniquely combines dynamic action and tactical depth.

This is crazy, it's a fantastic looking game and I am so full of excitement right now it's unreal.

But... it's a port of a game they already made?! They... they didn't have to do that... they could have simply held off until The Witcher 3, we would have totally waited... but going back and building this for us? I'm taken aback, to be honest.

I suppose that the right and prudent thing would be to buy it from them on GOG when it comes?

Was it us in the community? Was it further research? Damn it Liam, get us a freaking interview because WTF is happening in this bizarre world :O

@s_d: Making Witcher 2 port seems like way less work for them. They already had an OS X native build of it. Witcher 3 on the other hand uses new version of their engine, and there is no indication that it supports OpenGL yet. And using the same D3D -> GL translation trick like they did in the Witcher 2 won't work, since they are using DirectX 11 there.

Surely they could take some code from the PS4 version? (unless that's using directX as well?)

Nooo and I just finished it on Windows lately :'(

That can help, since it's supposedly POSIX based. But graphics APIs there are not portable (PSSL): http://twvideo01.ubm-us.net/o1/vault/gdceurope2013/Presentations/825424RichardStenson.pdf

Cd Project has decided to report the release of The witcher III. Now, there is "possible" release on Linux for TWII + Gog.com available on Linux...

So, maybe that Cd Projekt has reported TWIII to port the game on Linux and release the game on Console + Windows + SteamOS ?

It will be great :D

Can't wait to buy The Witcher trilogy for Linux. ;-)

If they could release The Witcher 1 too

With my somewhat vested interested in games based on BioWare's Aurora engine, I'd be quite interested in that as well. :P

I'd especially like to see how they'll handle the Lua scripts. The Windows version was released with compiled Lua scripts, which are quite icky to work with.

How is Xoreos project doing by the way? It was supposed to target Witcher 1 too.
killx_den Mar 19, 2014
Meh and I just got it running on wine 2 days ago :/
But this is awesome news, will wait and play it native then :)

I started changing the codebase to use Ogre (*) (ogrewip branch in the public repository on GitHub), but it's unfortunately stalled again at the moment, as my RL takes up time.

In either case, The Witcher is a potential target, yes, but it's not in anyway close to even consider the work to have been started. That said, resource loading works; videos, sound and music plays; and I even started reading the model files. But that's about it: currently, xoreos only shows a model and plays a sound when starting The Witcher.

(*) Something I'm still not all that happy about. I keep having to write around Ogre idiosyncracies, and apart from the general Ogre issues unrelated to OpenGL, I also lack the OpenGL knowledge to know whether what I'm doing makes sense there.

@DrMcCoy: Thanks for the update on the project.

The Witcher 2 turned up in my Linux-library on Steam today. Seem to be able to download it as well, not sure if it works when downloaded though.

It's a good game and it's great to see it on Linux.
