Steam Hits The Big 500 For Linux Games

That is one heck of a milestone isn't it? 500 Linux compatible games are now on Steam which is a pretty great number to point anyone at. No longer will people keep stating "but Linux has no games", but sadly they will say Linux has very little AAA games which is true, but this will be a gradual build up of course.

I keep saying this, but I still never thought we would make it to a day like this. We have XCOM, Civilization and many more still to come with some surprise announcements later this year I've no doubt.

Once the Steam Machines/SteamOS are released, and if they are successful we should see the number rise even quicker.

So, how long before we hit 1000? End of the year maybe, who knows!

I will go get my party hat now...are you celebrating this milestone? Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

1000 by the end of the year actually seems feasible, seems to be exponential at the moment. But the news that steam machines are delayed may slow things down. That said, releasing before steam machines is probably a good call for developers so they can get bugs ironed out before then.

To put the number in perspective, PS4 and xbone have under 200 games each, so that's more than both combined (most of which aren't exclusives so even 300 unique games between the two would be extremely generous).

Obviously, there's still the lack of AAA games, but given that most of Linux gaming's future rests on steam machines and that no console in history has had even close to 500 games at launch (will be much more by then too) then the future looks pretty bright. To put things in perspective again, the xbox 360 had 18 games at launch and only a handful of those were half-decent AAA titles, the rest sucked. If I was still a console gamer now, I would buy a steam machine over a console hands down. Its success will just depend on the marketing behind it.

Yeah, they've got an army of free _very motivated_ beta testers at the moment - they would be wise to use us :)

It only shows 495 titles here: http://store.steampowered.com/search/?sort_by=Released&sort_order=DESC&category1=998&os=linux
The number crossed 400 less than two months ago. Considering the current pace at which games are greenlit - and the plans to drop the greenlight process altogether - the number is likely to double by next spring, but sadly the quality of releases is another story.

That's probably because the 500 counter includes unreleased games as well. When sorting by release date, these games disappear. I'm just speculating though, because among the games with no release date is Gear Up as well as Prison Architect or Metro: Last Light, while the latter two are obviously available, only have the date broken. So yeah, let's just stick to the official counter at http://store.steampowered.com/browse/linux/ :-)

While I am happy as Linux user / gamer a bit, I am still unsure if all the things happening really help us as gamers.

Issue #1: Because of engines such as Unity which allow somewhat easy game production on Linux, we face a lot of games which look graphically simple but require a extremely beefy maching. "Best" examples for this are games like Paranautical Activities, Sir you are being hunted, etc.

Something which looks worse than Games like UT2kX or Half-life2 and needs a quadcore CPU with a GeForce X40 to run fluently, will not find it's way to my PC.

Issue #2: The huge amount of beta, greenlight, early access games makes it nearly impossible to monitor all games. So for me as a gamer I have a lot of games to choose from for a small amount of money but the few "pearls" are hard to find and will be even harder to find in future.

A dumb question : single player 467 , multi player 120 (total 587) , But total games 500 ????

How about some games having both single and multiplayer? ;-)
WorMzy 6 Jun 2014
A game can have both singe player and multiplayer modes. Take Portal 2, for example.

It's good to see so many games on Linux now.:D
Imants 6 Jun 2014
I think we are at last at that level where we can start to count actually good games on Linux not total :)

I had named 2013 The Year Of Linux Gaming, but it certainly looks like I jumped the gun a bit!

Until we have the big 5(battlefield, Lol, WoW,Cod, UT4) we will not see any improvement in market share
