To balance both my schedule and my workload I decided to pick and play something that isn't too heavy on content and mechanics. Not The Robots fits that category nicely so let's see what's in store for us this time.
Not The Robots by 2DArray is a stealth game that differs quite a lot from others. You play as a sentient robot who has to avoid various security systems in various office buildings and eat furniture to progress from one level to the next one. Yes, you eat furniture. The problem is that you use that furniture to hide from lasers and sentries that will try to kill you so it's worth planning ahead before munching all those chairs and desks away.
Like I said, this game isn't filled with a ton of different mechanics but instead it does its own simple thing really well. The gameplay always follows the same simple pattern. You complete the objectives that are occasionally thrown at you, for example step on some tiles in certain order, avoid getting killed and eat enough furniture to exit the level and begin another one.
The game doesn't get boring though. The levels are randomly generated and they get difficult quite fast (depending on the difficulty level of course). Because of this the game has a lot of replay-value. And you'll be replaying the game, because each time you die you'll have to start over again. However dying is not just a punishment. Each time you complete a level you get points and not getting hit by anything or eating all of the furniture in a level grants you bonuses. When you die you get level progression based on the amount of points you gather and each level unlocks something new. It might be a new ability or possibly a new trap to increase the variety in the levels. In my opinion this is an excellent way of keeping the game interesting and rewards failures instead of making me pull out my hair every time I fail in an epic manner.
I played the game using my gamepad, which I only do in rare cases, but here the gamepad shines and while you can play the game just fine using a mouse and a keyboard I'd recommend dusting off your gamepad and leaning back. Especially if you have a living room Steam machine or are planning on building/buying one I think this game might be something to play on that machine.
There is plenty of fun to be had here. The gameplay is super simple and easy to pickup and the randomized nature coupled with the level progressing ensures you won't be running out of content too quickly. You also unlock challenge levels while you play, so you can play through those if the campaign feels too easy. It's also something you an play for a short period of time as the levels don't take too long to complete and it saves your progress in between levels.
