Leszek Godlewski announced on Twitter that he will be leaving the Linux porting business, but the news isn't that bad. One of the original coders is taking over the Linux port of Darksiders.
I'm leaving the Linux porting business, but Darksiders is in good hands — one of the original Vigil coders is taking it over from me!

It's sad, but we can't really argue with his reasoning. Working remotely has a lot of drawbacks, and it's not for everyone.
We will keep you posted when some more solid details about Darksiders comes in, until the next time folks!

Wow, a pity, this guy is an awesome porter!
That's something I would love to do, porting games to linux.

Can't wait for this game to be released on Linux...

What, he was defeated by the silly glitch ? :)
Joke aside, so sorry to hear that, especially now when we need more good porters.
I know that some are discontent with his work on Deadfall and Painkiller but I think he is (was?) good at his job.
I wonder what exactly "leaving the Linux porting business" means. I see he is leaving for The Astronauts, and they're looking into Linux too.

It's a Shame that Leszek leave the porting. I have doubts with this project

aww man. Sucks to lose a good porter, though I can't argue with his reasoning. His reply to HadBabits on twitter sounds good to me though! Been looking forward to this one. It's one of my good friends favorite franchises and I keep telling him I'm finally going to play it when it comes to Linux.

Sad... he making good ports like Painkiller H&D and Deadfall Adventures and now making Darksiders and Darksiders 2...

I would love that. I'd much rather see a Linux version of Ethan Carter than Darksiders anyway. I always found Darksiders to be a very boring game. Maybe it's just the PC version, i'm not sure.

Joke aside, so sorry to hear that, especially now when we need more good porters. If this means that there's another studio out there with internal Linux know-how, then there's a positive side too (ultimately, I feel that the future of Linux gaming lies with people who do stuff internally) :)

I see he is leaving for The Astronauts, and they're looking into Linux too. When I spoke to him last week, he said he was looking forward to working with creative people on new projects. I imagine he'll help out with Linux stuff, but it sounds like he's keen to sink his teeth into something that isn't digging through other people's code for existing projects.

I bet he has some interesting things to say.

He had some neat stuff to say, and was one of my favourite guests (they're all my favourite though). He also joined us for a Painkiller event that we had a bunch of weeks before that. Sadly, I wasn't able to make that one.

Actually yes, that was really great, relevant questions and answers galore.
I wish more people will listen to "Unreal Engine 3 shader system is totally unfit for use with OpenGL" part so that the reasons for the long Deadfall/Painkiller loading times will be more understood.
Thanks for the audiocast, great stuff.

Killing floor 2 uses Unreal Engine 3 and probably to maximum effect, does this mean it will have long load times ??

It will probably depend on the amount of used shaders and whatever methods they will use to mitigate the issue.
From what I remember KF2 is made with Linux in mind from the very start and I think we'll have no problems with it.

CD Projekt Red should hire him to work on porting REDengine to Linux ;)

REDengine has unreleased games - Witcher 2 and Cyberpunk 2077. CDPR just didn't show any eagerness to add Linux support to their engine yet.

I think there are not many people out there who have the skills to do linux ports. This is a much more difficult/annoying work than making games for linux or crossplattform! You dig around in other peoples code and I am sure you see horrible things there. Only very few people can stand this for long and make things work the way he did it.
So Leszek Godlewski is indeed a very big loss for linux gaming :( . Lets hope he does at least something heavily linux gaming related now. But maybe his work will encourage other skilled linux developers to join the porting circus for a while in the future.
