Update: Metro 2033 Redux is now downloading.

Original article:
tagline-image
Both Metro 2033 Redux & Metro Last Light Redux now have Linux icons on Steam, but they aren't currently downloadable. Looks like someone either forgot a switch or two.

Someone actually emailed in to ask us to notify people of this horrific scam taking place. Sarcasm aside, it happens a lot, and it's due to how many switches you need to hit on the Steam control panels or something.

Steam itself is saying it's out now:

Considering they are on sale right now too, it's probably legit, but the developers forgot to make the download completely public. We will update you when we have more folks.

Ps. If it was you who said it was a scam, please take this as a joke, really! We like to make light of annoying situations.

About the games
Both FPS games have been revamped, and this time Metro 2033 is available on Linux for the first time thanks to it using a newer engine.

Looks like you need 64bit too, so yet again it's time to upgrade if you haven't. They also require OpenGL 4. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Wasn't this on sale yesterday for 16.99$? It said "on sale till Monday 12/15", but today the bundle is up to 25$. A shame they upped the price just before I got paid. No sale. :\

it was, and this is just a wild guess, but the sale price yesterday was kind of a slap in the face to those who pre ordered the game only for it to be cheaper when it was finally released. I pre ordered but I personally don't care. However, I can see how it would make others angry and there are a few posts on steam from people complaining about it so I guess the upped the price because of it.

VSync doesn't seem to work properly in 2033, not even by forcing it in the nVidia control panel. I've found a workaround in the Arch Wiki that seems to fix the issue by forcing VSync at driver level but I'd like to know if anyone else is having the same problem.
Other than that it runs quite well at very high settings (2x SSAA).
I'm on Arch, with Cinnamon and nVidia GTX 770 (proprietary drivers).

Can anybody confirm is it's working well with the ATI proprietary drivers? Also if there are no options to set the resolution, is it at least using the default resolution set in the driver settings?

Confirming it works on AMD R9 270x with last version of catalyst proprietary drivers.

As for the resolution there are two values that seem to set the resolution in the user.cfg file that might work:

r_res_hor 1920
r_res_vert 1200

The file is located in /steamapps/common/Metro 2033 Redux/

However I have not tried this yet so I can't confirm it works, I'll post my results as soon as I do.

EDIT: Changing the resolution in the user.cfg worked

EDIT # 2: After saving your settings or saving the game, a new user.cfg is created in your save folder which is the one the game refers to at launch. If your game crashes after the tunnel intro, delete the user.cfg file. This happened to me when updating my AMD drivers from 14.06 to 14.12.

Al least one game, that equals to Windows version.
No, It doesn't have all the settings Windows has. No tessellation too which has me really upset... They said it would be exact to the Windows version.
In fact I see some parallax mapping of some sort in many textures... and the r_dx11_tess parameter is set to 1 by default. Could we have some reliable screenshot comparison? I've been looking for some on the web but didn't find anything apart from that:

There is no volumetric lighting either, It's not the same as Windows. I'm pretty sure the first port had some tessellation stuff hidden in a file somewhere too, but it did nothing. I'm just not buying their games anymore until I see videos and pictures of it compared. OpenGL is totally capable of doing everything the Windows version can. If you don't have the resources too port it properly that's understandable, but don't sell a game, then release a "Redux" version of that same game, and still not have it equally as good as the Windows version when they said it would be.

Guys the game has no tessellation, and no volumetric lighting. Stop arguing about if it has it or not. Its pretty obvious that it does not. The r_dx11_tess setting is from the windows version...obviously.

Ok, I don't mean to wade in, but when folks are saying "no tesselation and no volumetric lighting", is that based on code/files or on observation? If observation, are you using the FOSS graphics stack or one of the proprietary ones? In particular, I remember some mention being made of OpenGL 4.0 being a requirement, are these features being disabled because they are seeing OGL 3.X?

I am on Arch Linux with the latest non beta Nvidia proprietary drivers. Honestly I dont even know why openGL 4.0 is a requirement. The game looks to be running the exact same engine version as the non redux metro last light game but with physX added.

I get it sucks that it is missing tessellation and volumetric lighting, maybe it will come in an update? *fingers crossed* but it still looks damn good. It is easily the most graphically demanding game available for Linux and it runs REALLY well.. I expected a barely polished turd that ran like crap. I was surprised to find out it is not a turd at all.

Instead of looking at the "bad", look at the good. The Borderlands games are great and pretty games in their own right but they are not very demanding. These games ARE demanding, they look amazing AND Nvidia Physx is there. Is there even another game that has real Nvidia Physx? I see this as a milestone for Linux gaming. Undeniable proof that Linux IS capable of supporting the amazing looking games available to windows AND running well. Before I just had to assume it was possible. No I don't consider the stripped down version of TW2 a contender because what we got was the game basically running in DX9 mode.

This actually gives me a lot of hope for our future. Other big studios need to see this and see that it is possible when you throw out the old OGL to try and remain compatible with older hardware. Games are now coming to windows DX11 only so they are already not caring about the people with unsupported hardware. If you don't have it and you want to game, it is time to get hardware with DX11/OGL4 support.
titi Dec 13, 2014
awww why is it now 50% for the bundle( in germany ) ? When I was at work today it was off at 66% in the german store too, saying offer ends in 2 days. But when I got home 3 hours later it was only 50 % .
Well in this case I maybe better buy it on ebay?
HadBabits Dec 13, 2014
What has everyone been using to benchmark fps? Glxosd produces black boxes in Metro Redux for some reason. The game seems to run okay; occasionally graphical glitches on my GTX 760 (driver version 331.38).

This may be one of the most demanding games on Linux, but it's certainly not my favorite from a technical standpoint. Anyone else remember that beautiful options menu from Borderlands 2?
coryrj19951 Dec 13, 2014
Well, pleased to say that it runs perfectly on the highest settings on my Radeon hd r9 270x (newest 14.12 omega drivers) :D
I never thought ANYTHING that looked this good would ever run on my computer, this is one great port!

I'm using KDE's own Tearing Prevention (Vsync), works like a charm. I disable Vsync in all my games and just let KDE handle it.

I'm not arguing, am I? Also I didn't even mention volumetric lightning...

There is obviously some parallax mapping, I was just wondering if that was the "tessellation" people refer too, as it's a pretty ambiguous term, and I just can't find any reference for comparison.
Also a port that still carries references to DX11 even if it's running OpenGL doesn't shock me, because of obvious internal engine organization (or use of Valve's TOGL), so that's why I asked.

But you are right, as it is, there is no proper tessellation in Metro Redux... I was just questioning its existence on Windows version as it is also questioned on the link I provided earlier.

As for volumetric lightning, I definitely didn't see the effect in-game so you're right to point this out.

Maybe we should start a topic in the support forums? There's little chance that they notice it, but trying won't cost us too much either.

Thanks, I'll try that

For Steam games I'm using voglperf. Metro redux also has a benchmark function.

Just to say I just installed KDE to try the V-sync option there and yes, it works very well indeed! :)

Metro 2033 redux does not downlaod anything for me, what's up with that... O.o

Started playing 2033 today. Oddly, everything seems to work really well, except for the loading screens which lag and/or hang for a second of two when they first appear.

It's not oddly, it is a really good port. I was aprehensive when I saw the hiccpus on the intro cutscene and loading screens but the game itself runs great.

I don't know much about computer graphics but the game does seem to definitely have some tesselation enable, at least at very high settings.

About having some missing graphical options, this game come out for linux with steamOS in mind, I guess. We have to be realistic about that, so maybe we should expect some "consolization" of some linux games. I can certainly live with that and hope for more quality ports like this one, although maybe there are still a couple of patches coming in and who knows what they might bring. Also, I really hope that Bioshock Infinite will be a port alike this one and run like it.

It is truly a quality port, all tho my heart did skip a beat when it started stuttering on the loading, didn't think it was going to run, and crash. It loads and runs almost flawlessly :D
