Hi, hello, I will be taking this post from now on and will do the basic thing that is done every month, give some thoughts on it and the usual disclaimers to not take these numbers as something precise or some real representation of us or something like that.

Linux results for November 2014
Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS 64 bit 0.43% -0.07%
Ubuntu 14.10 64 bit 0.13% +0.13%
Linux Mint 17 Qiana 64 bit 0.12% 0.00%
Linux 3.10 64 bit 0.09% 0.00%
Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS 0.06% -0.02%

Total: 1.13% + 0.01%
Last Month: 1.12%

As it was said, don't take the numbers as something precise.... these are the numbers Valve shared today and I will be updating the article if I see any change along the month.

My thoughts on it

This may have been the most stable month for us according to the survey.... really, the only change was the Ubuntu people making their change for the new version of the OS. So, well, we are standing with stable numbers again.

Things to note

Just be aware these results will probably not be that accurate as we don't know how they do their percentage results, they could be rounding up, rounding down or truncating the percentages. So a 0.5% could actually be nearly 0.6% as it could be 0.59% but they could do no rounding and simply truncate it.

Also remember it is a survey, so it won't ask every single one of you to do it. It would only be truly accurate if it did it behind the scenes, but that's not what a survey is for this is just to get a general idea.

One more thing to think about: These numbers although not big, very probably come, at least mostly, from people that are already into Linux as their main desktop OS and won't change that.... so from here the only way is up, as Linux may get more and more popular some day.... you never know. Let's keep wishing success to the Steam Machines at least.

Final Note: Look at it this way, Steam has around 100 million active users, 1% of 100 million is about 1,000,000 (1 million) people. What developer wouldn't want to hook into a market that big? Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Well I don't think anyone is going to move from GNU/Linux to Windows, so I agree that numbers can only go up. It is a bit like the issue of religion versus atheism/agnosticism: never heard of a atheist becoming a believer! :P

I would like total numbers comparsions... since the total user numbers is growing... showing only the % hides a lot of information

Once again a survey that doesn't cover all Steam users, worthless numbers mean nothing.

Valve should just publish the number of Steam for Linux downloads. ;-)

Yes, that would be nice. Those are the kind of stats I expect them to blurt out when they're giving talks on SteamOS at conferences and things.

Lots of people tried linux and most of them probably will never want to back on linux again. They try linux because they are curious. I think the number of real steam linux users is less than 1% and our number will never grow up than that.

That's what a survey is. To gather all numbers would be a full statistic. A survey is a general view on things to give an idea at a bigger picture.

Yeah, can we leave religion out of things before people get emotional about it please.
