I can unlock the drop-down menu item and have it selected but I still get a message box:
"Don't Starve Together Beta is not available on your current platform."
Valve need to understand that if Steam Machines are going to compete with consoles then they need to incentivise developers to have actual multiplayer. At the moment it's just the Portal 2 missions, Left 4 Dead 2 if you tinker with it a bit and some indie games that aren't exactly going to pull people away from their Call Of Duty and FIFA.

+1, Local co-op games are a must for me.
How did you manage to get local co-op in left4dead ? Why isn't it official ?
If you look round steam, there's a lot of guides on how to do it. It's mostly just pulling up the console in-game and typing in a few commands. There's a video one here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nlp1j9u3T1Y
No idea why it was never made official.
Install says it's finished in less than one second and when trying to start the game I get "Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)".
Opting into the OSX/Linux beta branched was successfull then, but still no install button. Rightclicking on the game an then pressing install leads to the message:
"Don't Starve Together Beta is not available on your current platform."
Using Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS 64bit (german locale).
Any ideas? Restarting Steam or changing content servers didn't help.
PS: Same on my mac.
edit: Strange, just after waiting for a while, the install button appeared. Now I could install it on Linux (which I rebooted once in the meatime) and OS X (which was not rebooted). It seems to have been just a matter of time.
Thank you. Well, I will try this later, when I have access to my xbox360 controllers.
In my opinion, every multiplayer game should offer a splitscreen option.
I was trying to get a client working for a few hours last night, Wine, Virtualbox, Playonlinux, nothing was working for me.
