It's been a while since I covered the new Unreal Tournament that's currently in Alpha, so here's a fresh look at it. The way to launch it has changed since we last covered it too.
You can download it here, but you need to be logged in.
To launch it you need to "cd" into this directory:
And then run this:
Currently it seems there is no background image on the launcher, but there's supposed to be. Looks like that's a minor Linux bug.
Gameplay video:
The performance on my 970 on the highest settings even this early on is pretty good. The stuttering here and there in the video is just due to the overhead SSR creates when recording. It's actually quite smooth normally, and looks great.
It looks like it's really starting to come together, and I look forward to seeing it mature into a great free to play shooter. It will be nice to see more complete levels come together, and not full of place-holder art and textures, but that will come in time.
Have you tried it yet? What do you think?

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
Quoting: michawell, the graphics actually look worse than most last gen shooters atm. So not really a great advertisement for UE4.. still looking forward to newer versions. =)There's one level that's up to the visual standard you'd expect (absolutely amazingly gorgeous), so you can see what the engine can do and the rest are, as liamdawe said, placeholders.

This is the only game I'm ever come across that you can't map the numpad keys. I've always used the numpad keys since ut99. It works in Windows but not in Linux. I wish they would fix something as simple as this. I've posted this request in the linux dev forums on forums.unrealtournament.com but they never respond no matter what you post there. The graphic for the main screen hasn't worked for about 3-4 months. Also there doesn't seem to be any preloading of some graphics. The first time I fire a weapon, it will stop for about half a second. It will do that for every weapon and for every different skin that shows on the screen. I think most (if not all) of their work is going into Windows version.

Why did you post this level and not the completed amazing looking level ?
Im more into either proper shooters like quake/xonotic or more tactical like ARMA or Insurgency. UT just seems a bit 'in the middle '

For me the link to the download is not working.
Looks like I cannot open the UT forum site.
I can login fine to the main UT site.

Quoting: sarmadQuoting: ProfessorKaos64What are you talking about? What drivers? Look at the video posted by Liam, then Google Call of Duty PS3 and compare.Quoting: michawell, the graphics actually look worse than most last gen shooters atm. You may need to update your drivers.
Okay seems some people are confused to how game development works. This game is in pre-alpha, very very early stages of development. There is no point fully texturing a level when you are still designing and changing the level so placeholder textures are used, often flat bland ones to allow the game to run well because at this point almost no optimisation has happened.

That's an example of a level that is closer to being 'complete' as you can see it doesn't look like a ps3 game.
As for the game itself, its pretty great so far. I'm a fan of the old ones but until they have the launcher working correctly I think I'll keep the game on my windows install. Redownloading the whole game every build is annoying.

I can access their forum just fine...if I'm not logged in. The minute I log in the site will not load.

Quoting: GuestHello,
I just wanted to share my experiences.
First some people complain about the bad graphics. The graphics option that lead to bad visuals for me was the "Screen Percentage" which computes low-res images and scales up afterwards. Setting this to 100% was a big improvement for me.
Second, somebody asked about the ATI performance. I use a R9 280X with proprietary drivers (Ubuntu 15.04) and the game runs just fine. No crashes.
Additionally, setting to OpenGL3 can improve performance for many as seen in the exec line of my Launcher.
There are many other parameters that can be fed to UE4 engine games.
