XCOM: Enemy Unknown is easily one of the best strategy games ever in my eyes (review here), so if you haven't tried it I seriously think you should try it since it's free for a weekend. Also, XCOM 2 looks like it will be a day-1 release.
Find XCOM: Enemy Unknown on Steam now, and try it free until Sunday.
You can also now pre-order XCOM 2 on Steam, so it looks like it will be a day-1 release. We still never suggest pre-ordering to save yourself issues, but considering they are already advertising Linux/SteamOS and Feral Interactive posted it on their twitter it could be a safe bet. If you pre-order you get access to a special "Resistance Warrior Pack" which has soldier customization options in it.
What will you do, pre-order or wait?

Always was interested in XCOM but it never seemed like my kind of game - here goes nothing I guess.
(Anyone who wants to rave - tell me what its like, I just hope with every AAA game that its something 4 me.)

I would never preorder it, but if it gets good reviews after release I'll most likely buy it then.
I've only ever preordered games twice: first with Europa Universalist 4 before I knew any better (I wasn't burned though, it was a great game), then with The Talos Principle after I'd tried the demo and it was confirmed to be a day 1 Linux release. I just don't see any point in preordering these days with all the overhyped crap coming out.

Quoting: kingofrodeoI never pre-order, ever. There's no reason to, I can only play the game the day it comes out so what's the point?
I like to pre-order on (semi-)rare occasions, to show my appreciation to developers for making games I love, despite the very small market share my preferred genres and OS have.
I believe it to be kind of similar to donating (time and/or money) to open source projects, if it can make someone's day a little better, then that's worth whatever the cost.

I like to support Feral -- but am gonna have to wait for this to get released before I'll put some money down.

As often as Valve makes mistakes on their website, I wouldn't be surprised if it's just an oversight that Linux users can pre-order. Since it's a third-party port, they would have to wait until the original devs finish before they start porting. Unless Feral chimes in here and says it's a day-one release, I wouldn't believe it.

I agree with the above that it's best to wait and make sure it's truly day 1 release before buying.
That said, XCOM2 is one of my most wanted games, very happy that it's going to be on Linux. Would be even better if it was fully native from Firaxis, but at least it's not a wrapper.

It's like a heavily simplified turn-based RPG where character death is permanent but you can hire replacements.
I'm honestly not fond of the way the combat system limits you to two actions per turn, and I'm *really* not fond of the fact that it forces you to use your combat action last (I.E. you can move->move, move->shoot, or shoot). However, I think managing your base is a huge addition, and, combined with the semi-competent combat, makes the game a wonderful time-sink. I love it.

If the store page is already listing Feral Interactive as the developers for the Mac and Linux versions in the description, isn't it highly likely then that they are assisting current development rather than sidelined until a finished Windows version is complete?
I'm checking under the Developer and Publisher section, and Feral is listed under both already.

Yeah, I'll pass on pre-ordering, thanks. I do look forward to getting the game, though, once I've read/seen plenty of reviews and have assurance it works fine on Linux, or, better yet, once I've played a demo.

I do not plan to pre-order, no.
While XCOM ran perfectly on my machine with the AMD open source drivers Feral lost my trust with their latest ports.
As by then I will probably buy a new GPU anyway and it will be an AMD again (unless nvidia surprises me and open sources their drivers ;)) I can wait. Maybe it comes with a bundle then. If not, well... I'll let others check this out first.

According to Feral on Facebook where I asked if they would be supported if I pre-ordered. They seem to indicate that so long as we install on mLinux and play it there they will benefit.

Never had an opportunity to play XCOM: EU until today. I've installed it and after 20 minutes in game I've decided that this is a moment to buy it - looks very interesting and works ok on my machine which is not super powerful.
Btw. Valve did a very clever move when they decided to give players "free weekends" with games. I'm sure it generates huge income - better or similar to demo versions I guess.

XCOM never caught my interest. I have Xenonauts already, which I think is a beautiful tactical game in the spirit of the original XCOM games.
I watched a gameplay trailer of XCOM 2 though and was impressed how they managed to fluently combine actual gameplay with story telling and cutscenes. That's nicely done.

Not Valve's invention AFAIK.
Wouldn't work if you didn't have to log in every time you play though, which means GOG Galaxy will never follow suit.
