I may not like Garry Newman, or his games, but I know they are important to some people. I thought it was worth highlighting this. I will keep my own personal thoughts out of it this time.

Garry Newman, FacepunchSomething to keep in mind regarding Linux support. We don't make the engine, Unity do. So there's only so much we can do. Any problems that come up we try to fix. The only times problems aren't fixed is if fixing something for Linux would break something on Windows. That's where the quote in twitter comes from.

The hard truth is, from our point of view, that linux isn't financially worth us developing for. We develop for linux because it's the right thing to do. That said, we're obviously doing a shitty job supporting linux though, so it seems like we'd be better off not supporting it at all than supporting it half assed. This is something we have to consider when deciding whether to release games for Linux in the future. At the moment I'm leaning towards not releasing Linux versions of our future games.

Garry dosen't know anything about linux. He even blames the whole linux desktop for not being ready based on he's failed attempt to install Ubuntu 12.04 back a few years ago. He is just a noob developer who made a crappy game with unity engine. He is in no position to judge with he's lack of skills.

I've noticed a pattern: developers who mishandle their project tend to drop Linux development first and make disparaging comments about supporting the platform. It's no great loss, I say.

I wrote off Rust when after two-years of blowing through "investor's" money with no solid development plan in place, the developers suddenly announced that they were scrapping it all and starting over from scratch. And, hey, would you please give us Kickstarter and Early Access funds so we can continue risking other people's money while we play game developer despite having literally nothing to show for our efforts?

Yeah, no thanks.

Honestly, if he had trouble installing Ubuntu then I have to assume that he buys all of his computers with Windows already installed, because installing Ubuntu is no more difficult than installing Windows (boot the install DVD; select from a few well-explained options; wait for the install process to finish). If he can't do the one then I really don't see how he could do the other.

Well! Some pithy comments here; I think that most are warranted. Yes, I realize that a raft of games will never, ever be ported to Linux. I have 500+ Linux games in my library , and roughly 50% are pretty lousy (or great, but excessively difficult for my aging fingers and reflexes ;) ), but the other roughly 50% are terrific and playable (see above).

Feral and Aspyr seem pretty happy with the response and sales from Linux users, and so do a lot of indie developers. Yeah, there will always be gripers :><: about the miniscule Linux representation among Steam users, and the corresponding small amount of sales, but there are so many devs who are happy to put out Linux ports (because, as Garry did say, it's the right thing to do) and the corresponding small number of sales .

The Humble Bundles did prove that Linux users are hungry for games, and that fact, besides sales, should keep them pushing out games for our beloved platform. It's still a great time to be a Linux gamer, and I thank Gabe Newell (and Canonical, for pushing Linux gaming as hard as they have) for the current, well, bright state of affairs .

God forbid anyone criticize the "great" Garry Newman.

God forbid anybody criticize Linux. Anyway, I didn't know who he was, I'm just pointing out that it's tiresome to see all these toxic replies any time somebody says: "I don't have the skill/capacity to support Linux".

If he'd said that, he'd have gotten a ton of sympathy and offers of help. But no, he's only saying that now after several months, if not years, taking the absolute piss out of Linux while making money by offering utterly appalling Linux versions of his Windows games.

Glad to see he's wising up, actually. I'd rather he stick with that attitude - take the SteamOS logo off Garry's Mod and Rust until he's willing to offer the same quality on those titles that Windows users enjoy. But I doubt it. He's only talking about future titles here, so G-Mod and Rust will continue to be sold as a supported platform, yet continue to play second class citizen.

While, I haven't started Rust in a long time (real waste of 20 euro that was), but last time I did it ran pretty terrible at my then single 290x in Windows. So there's that, though maybe they fixed the Windows version subsequently.

He uses a Mac Pro, with Windows on it instead of OSX. My experiences trying to install Ubuntu on Apples have always been extremely unpleasant.

loved gmod, it's super fun to just mess around in. Rust has a deep meta game, and is quite well done, even though the performance side has been shit lately the linux version runs quite well.

I just hope that Garry finds that Linux will be worth supporting, else we won't support facepunch in the future.
