Another updated version of a classic roguelike was released for Linux earlier this month. Players can expect to fight monsters, explore and have all the traditional trappings of dungeon crawlers.
XLarn is based off of the 80s roguelike Larn. This updated version features a graphical tileset and accessibility options that weren't present in the original. Additionally, it features 99 levels of difficulty and modern amenities like leaederboards and more randomization. At its core, however, it remains the same popular classic.
I've dabbled with various roguelikes over the years and it's always nice to have variety. I can't even begin to count the number of hours I've spent playing the excellent and free Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. I've been meaning to check out ADOM but I'll consider giving XLarn a chance sometime. The lack of sounds (which are promised to come in future patches) and a few UI issues, however, keep me from buying XLarn right away. Unfortunately, we're spoiled for choice when it comes to roguelikes and many of them are free (and FLOSS!), so that works against releases like these.
Official About
Visit this Retrogame, its full of surprises and challenges. Deep down in the Earth, Demonic Temples await you. The countdown will begin as you make your way in search of the only hope your daughter has for recovery. She has fallen gravely sick and the villagers all say that her only chance is an elixir found somewhere in the deepest temples underground. A home to demons and other unknown horrific monsters, these “Demonic Temples” can only be accessed through a dead volcano. You must first navigate through an intricate cave system, developing yourself and your skills as you go. Unknown dangers are sure to already be awaiting you there. Use the resources of your village to help you on your mission. Shop at the stores, visit the school or the bank. They all have something to offer. You will need all of the resources that you can find to successfully explore past the caves and reach the medicine down below. The Demonic Temples will have no mercy, so prepare yourself on the way and be ready for a surprise if you want to make a level again, because it will never be the same.
You can buy XLarn on Steam.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.
