a 40k users social network isn't so mandatory. Cut out the non-english speakers (seems to be a lot due to the fact that the two bigger servers are german) I think the minimal effort to keep the page up to date isn't worth.

Where did you get the 40k number? It's more than 600k (I already gave the link above on statistics: https://the-federation.info ). Also, what's "mandatory"? If you care about FOSS and not supporting those who use your information for profit, then use diaspora*, not FB or G+. For those who don't care that's of course irrelevant. In my understand social network should be a communication tool, not a tool to harvest people's profiles. Therefore it has to be decentralized to avoid such pitfalls.

Thunderbird has an IRC interface as well! As for standalone: XChat.
Xchat is dead (since 2011), no development

I appreciate the info, but I never used their crypto in the first place, just regular chat o3o Even though I advocate for privacy, I'm more concerned with getting legislation passed to prevent such invasions in the first place, rather than worry if my specific conversations with my girlfriend is encrypted.
Whatever your reason for securing your communications, I respect that. However, outside of that, Telegram is a fantastic program for those just concerned with talking to each other.

All of that tells me one thing: Telegram is still secure, and hasn't been broken. I am using it for the useful features more than anything.

It was explained multiple times already. Telegram server is insecure and not FOSS, there is no end to end encryption. I.e. if you want Big Brother to be on the other end, Telegram is an option ;)

Like I said, so is any service that you don't host yourself to know exactly what is happening with the data.
I use Telegram as I like the features and clients.
This isn't a privacy debate either, just pointing out places people can join in and chat or follow the news.

Hm. I wouldn't recommend Telegram to privacy concerned. Its server isn't FOSS.
May be there should be some presence on diaspora*? https://diasporafoundation.org
Also, in addition to IRC it's good to have an XMPP chat room.
I do like Diaspora, Just lack of users and features, theres no groups so theres no hub for people who like certain types of things.
If the tech people on G+ switched to Diaspora and when Diaspora gains XMPP, I'd probably not use G+ except to talk to 2 people.

Not in diasp.eu yet, I only know 2 pods that have it currently, and group chats dont serve the same purpose as group pages, but they both complement each other.

Once you have an XMPP server though you can set up any chats you want really. You can already do that on various existing ones, no need to wait for diaspora* to deliver it.

I don't really see why it matters that the two biggest servers are German. Most Germans speak English, especially the ones involved in tech and political stuff (I guess that's diaspora*'s prime target audience). As a German diaspora* user I'd be happy, if we had channel, group, whatever in the network ;-).
btw. There already is someone posting a lot of links to GoL under the #linux and #games tag.
