Heavy Gear Assault heading to Linux

By -
The newest game in the Heavy Gear series built with Unreal Engine 4 is heading to Linux, the developers shared two images of the game running on Linux. Quite exciting, as it looks pretty good.

Here's the screenshots they shared:

What was primarily going to be a multi-player game will now also include a single-player in the form of episodes. It's not entirely clear if any single-player episodes are in game yet, as I find their website a little confusing to find out exactly what is in the game right now.

It costs $39.95 to get what's essentially a starter-pack for the game, and it has different packs available that give you more Gears (mechs) and more TEC (money). Buying that pack (the cheapest) does give you access to all the game systems.

It looks like everything in the game that gives any kind of advantage will be unlockable in-game, but some cosmetic items may only be available with real world cash (microtransactions).

From their wording, it sounds like it's not actually out just yet, but will be soon.

Will you be buying a copy? I've requested a review key.

Nice.
I've spent hours on Mechwarrior 2 on my old 486DX2 during my childhood, but I've never touched a single game in the heavy gear series. But seeing a native mech game on linux is pretty excinting.

Same here, Mercenaries was bloody good.

Wasn't Heavy Gear 2 ported by Loki?

Ah! You're right !
I totally forgot about this game, I've bought it from lgp some years ago; sadly, I've never been able to get it to work on gentoo.
I'll have to find the box again and try it on archlinux.

Mechs = good
Microtransactions = bad

But I'm willing to take a wait and see approach with this. Always nice to get something new in the genre.

I hope they try to do crowdfunding again on kickstarter, they could of got lots of money if they didn't try to focus on making the game a free to play esports title. Everyone wanted singleplayer but since it became a tacked on stretch goal deep into the kickstarter people had already given up on it. They could of been the Star Citizen of crowdfunded Mech simulators. All we have is Mechwarrior Online and Battletech.

Hey nice. Heavy Gear 2 (Loki port) was the first ever game I bought on Linux. :)

Hope the single player on this will be decent though.
