The latest and greatest available for Paradox, Hearts of Iron IV is now available as a day-1 release for Linux & SteamOS.

Paradox are usually pretty good with sending us along a key and I have requested one, but in all fairness I only did the request today so it may be days before I can write it up in any detail. I imagine one of our other editors will also be looking into it, so there may be a decent post up on it regardless.

It's really quite fantastic that Paradox supports Linux so well now with day-1 releases.

About the game (Official)
Victory is at your fingertips! Your ability to lead your nation is your supreme weapon, the strategy game Hearts of Iron IV lets you take command of any nation in World War II; the most engaging conflict in world history.

From the heart of the battlefield to the command center, you will guide your nation to glory and wage war, negotiate or invade. You hold the power to tip the very balance of WWII.

It is time to show your ability as the greatest military leader in the world. Will you relive or change history? Will you change the fate of the world by achieving victory at all costs?

You can grab it on Games Republic to support us, or on Steam. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I would like to play it but I don't buy censored games, which would not be a problem if it would not have a shitty geolock...

Why didn't they do it like Dead Island or Dying Light? I just buy my international key somewhere else and can play the game legally like other people all over the world...

Well sucks to live in germany...

I hadn't been following HoI4, so I was fairly annoyed by this trailer, until I saw that it was actually intended to be a hypernationalist American caricature, and that there were also Russian and British variants.

5mins in the game got lost,
tried tutorial for another 10mins got lost again = ALT + F4...
I guess another strategy bites the dust... next... :|

Anyone who plays any of the Paradox grand strategy games (Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis) all know that they have huge learning curves. Would be nice if they made them a bit more accessible like Civilization. But then again that may ruin it for the advanced people that love these games.

I ended up trying to sit through a tutorial for CK2, but had other things to do, so still haven't played a full game of it.

Also I do have to complain a bit about their nickel and dime method of DLC. But at least they do expand upon their games for years to come, so it's a love/hate thing.

I read that in your country they even removed pictures of Hitler and at least some of his generals. That's a little silly, indeed. A game that tries to accurately portrait history should be able to do so without getting accused of glorifying the Nazis. Who did they replace Hitler with anyway? Donald Trump? :p

Tbh, Paradox games are famous for being super detailed and hence super complicated. If you don't like that, this company's games aren't for you. I love their games for being the way they are...

Great job again Paradox with your full support on Linux on day one!

Is this intended to be satire? Paradox is not known for making n00b friendly casual games, and Hearts of Iron has traditionally been their most complex offering.

Just played the tutorial (Italy). My first impression is, it is more complex then Stellaris but the Stellaris tutorial is better. There is only text to read, no voice for example. But I think, after the first 2h, it will be a lot of fun playing more.

No problems so far, everything was stable. The graphic settings are all at max.

What I don't get, there is a "special" German version. I bought the Cadet edition in steam from within Germany today aftere release but I can see the pictures from the Germans. There is a German portray DLC installed though. Maybe someone made a mistake by Paradox or Valve?

(I don't care much about accuracy of the portrays but seeing the pictures left a bad taste. Thats might be because of the many documentary films I saw about that time. However, HoI4 is a strategy game and from the game point of view it is very abstract. Far more abstract like CoH for example.)

The minimum requirements are interesting, seems Linux is the most efficient (also only with controller support?)!

Steam Machine + Steam Controller for the win! \o/

Just bought the game (obviously)! :D

Can it really be played well with a controller?

Paradox, some of the best developers/publishers in the gaming industry! And not only for Linux, they are truly great! Top-quality products with constant improvement and updates! Also they made at least some of their games very, VERY, moddable (look at CK2 - it can be medieval history, game of thrones, elder scrolls, it can be whatever!). AFAIK all their games are very well made, moddable and support Linux... maybe except for some of the older titles. CK1 for example doesn't but also I don't know anyone out there who plays that game and not the second installment. I've also got HOI3 which doesn't support Linux as well but this new one, IV does, and I plan on getting it eventually. I also plan on getting Stellaris which I'm very excited for. I haven't played a good space strategy game since GalCiv2 and unfortunately GC3 doesn't support Linux :(

I still haven't gotten around actually playing HOI3 because it looked overwhelmingly hard to play and learn. But Ck2 also looked really intimidating but eventually got the hang of it after a few tries and now I love it and I think it's one of the best games I've played. I'm sure HOI4 will be one of my favs too, since I'm really into WW2 history and video games.

I have to be honest, I've had too much bad experience with Paradox lately and haven't had much interest in getting more games from them, BUT I actually find this one pretty interesting.
What I'd like to know is, is the game complete and fun to play on release? Or will it need DLC to become a good game? If the latter, I won't get it as Paradox games become notoriously expense in DLC and I have no wish to support that. If however HoI4 is a great game now, I might consider getting it.
On the other hand, I see they already have unit skin DLC for preorders, which kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
