Simutrans is a bit of an oldie in the open source gaming world, but it's pretty good and it has now found its way onto Steam.
I really love more open source games coming to Steam, as it enables them to get a lot more free advertising just by being available there. It could even help them pick up more developers.
About the game (Official)
Simutrans is an open-source transportation simulation game available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Your goal is to establish a successful transport company and build the necessary infrastructure to transport passengers, mail and goods between cities, factories and tourist attractions by land, air and water.
Find it on Steam, or just go to the official website.

Since Cargodist is now in OpenTTD trunk, I don't see, why I should return to Simutrans. Where there any notable changes in the last ~5 years?

How is this different from OpenTTD?

The most noticeable feature is the way, how tracks are build. In Simutrans, you tell the game, that a tile should have track and immediately all neighbouring tiles get connected. In OpenTTD, you can actually tell the game, which part of the 6 possible tracks on a tile (north-south, east-west, north-east, east-south, south-west or west-north; or any combination thereof...) should be build. This allows much more fine-grained control over the allowed routes in junctions without the need for excessive signal placement.

OpenTTD is lightyears ahead of this one.

Airport building in simutrans is still killer. In Simutrans you can build an airport with an arbitrary layout. The airports in OpenTTD are basically useless if you have more than a few aircraft.
