Mad Max [Feral Mini Site] is officially being released on the 20th of October for Linux & SteamOS, it’s finally coming!

After initially being confirmed for Linux way back in March 2015, we finally have confirmation that not only is the Linux port real, but it’s coming damn soon too.

From the press release:

Quote“We’re delighted to be bringing Mad Max to Mac and Linux PC,” said David Stephen, Managing Director at Feral Interactive, “With its exhilarating combat, outlandish characters and beautiful end-of-the-world visuals, Mad Max perfectly captures the atmosphere and thrill of The Wasteland.”

System requirements:
Intel i5 or AMD FX8350 3.4 GHz CPU
8GB RAM
SteamOS 2.0 or Ubuntu 16.04 or better.

The game also requires an NVIDIA 660ti series graphics card or better, running driver version 367.35 or later. AMD and Intel GPUs are not supported at release.

If you want more information on AMD support in future, you can see this comment from Edwin who works at Feral, copied below:

Edwin, Feral InteractiveDue to various issues with Mesa we will not be supporting AMD on release. We only can officially support drivers if they meet the quality needed and sadly Mesa isn't quite there yet as it has a few issues and edge cases. It was a super close call but in the end we won't say a game is officially supported unless it runs great using release versions of the drivers and kernel.

However we developed the game using AMD cards as well as Nvidia so if you install the latest Mesa beta drivers and other updates as needed it runs it's just not at a level where we can provide official support as some edge cases will exist. Hopefully once all the Mesa developments get into a stable release version and all the related kernel improvements also are in a stable release then support for Mad Max and similar complex titles will be easier/possible.

Summary: AMD is unsupported meaning we don't recommend you purchase it on AMD GPUs, however we have don a lot of work towards support which should happen once all the improvements to Mesa/Kernel are in stable branches.

Releasing another game so soon after Dawn of War II [port report here], Feral sure are busy! I will hopefully have my usual report on the game up at release. Not long to go folks! Are you excited? Let me know in the comments!

After the news about Civ VI possibly not coming to Linux, this was a very well timed announcement.

Guys, hats off to you. Your level of commitment to mesa is great. I've seen at least two bug reports filed during the last week by Feral's James Legg (even one with a patch to fix it - https://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?id=e33f31d61f5e9019f8b0bac0378dfb8fd1147421 -) which I believe were related to this game. Thank you a lot, Feral!!

I will be shortly buying this game (as well as any other you may publish) together with Warhammer.

P.S.:
@edddeduckferal: A few question for Team Feral, if I may:

- Given that in the most recent releases you always refer to mesa and not fglrx/amdgpu-pro, do you guys see mesa as AMD's Linux drivers to focus on going forward?
- What are your feelings with the level of responsiveness and the delivery by the mesa devs (as opposed to the level of frustration some other devs have expressed regarding the closed source drivers)?
- Would you guys recommend other game devs to only focus on mesa for AMD on Linux?

@Liam: It may be worth asking/polling GOL readers questions they find interesting so that they can be "shot" at Team Feral. An interview with these awesome guys would be neat!

Everyone including AMD sees mesa as AMD's Linux drivers of the future. fglrx is dead since long and amdgpu-pro is basically just there for their enterprise customers (i.e people who need support contracts with AMD on their workstations, i.e companies).

Quoting: ziabiceFun Fact: "Mad Max" and "Shadow of Mordor" are listed into the best of average action games on PC list by Rock,Paper, Shotgun website.
Please Feral port some more games from that list (ie: Sleeping Dogs)!

Great news about Mad Max. I second for Sleeping Dogs! :)

I know, I haven't bought the game yet, I'm waiting for the Linux launch. The guy you were talking to did.
But anyway, I understand the temptation you are faced with when money is scarce. The life outside Linux has its price, you have a family, a kid, few cats, a dog and lots and lots of bills. You like to support Linux and you do everything within your financial power to do so, sometimes more than you can really afford.
The Linux launch might come with a sale, or maybe not. Maybe the guy wanted to make sure he's gonna play the game as soon as it was released on Linux and not wait for a sale...IDK. He spotted a chance to get the game for cheap on Steam and he took it. It wasn't the best thing to do for the Linux sales figures, but at the time it made sense for his family/kid/cats/dog/bills.
Is not something I would do, but I definitely sympathize.

Quoting: Mountain ManIf we had just one or two more developers like Feral then Linux gaming would be in very good shape, at least until developers start targeting Linux on their own.

I was hoping Aspyr would be one of them, but it isn't looking good with Aspyr right now. Virtual Programming isn't far behind the porting numbers from Feral, but they aren't publicly showing they are working on anything other finishing up Arma III right now so they may be shaky as well. Hopefully we see some movement from both of them in the next couple of months.

I think this will more than make up for not being able to play id Software's Rage on Linux.

YAY FERAL!!!

I wouldn't even want it. It has amazing gunfight and overall mechanics, but it is like a demo of a great game - ends when you think the real gameplay is starting. :S:

Oh, this is amazing news! Perfect timing too since: a) i recently bought the game on sale, b) was about to start playing later this month, c) my new steam link & controller has already been shipped

Go Feral, go!
