Khronos announced today that they are working on a new open standard for VR and Valve have already said they expect replace parts of their OpenVR with it.

From Khronos announcement:
KhronosDecember 6th 2016 – SIGGRAPH Asia - Macau – The Khronos™ Group, an open consortium of leading hardware and software companies, today announced a call for participation in a new initiative to define a cross-vendor, royalty-free, open standard for access to modern virtual reality (VR) devices.

Valve have also put out an announcement giving their support of it:
ValveThis new standard is the next logical step from what we’ve been working on with OpenVR. The VR team at Valve is hard at work with the rest of the VR standard group at Khronos to define these APIs. Over time we expect significant pieces of OpenVR itself to be replaced by the Khronos APIs.

It's now even less surprising that Razer joined Khronos as a member, since they work on VR too.

This is really fantastic news, and the support from different vendors is already looking good with AMD, ARM, Google, Epic Games, Intel, NVIDIA, Valve and more giving their kind words and support for it.

I wouldn't expect it to come soon, since it's in the very early stages. Khronos stated in their press release that "work on detailed proposals and designs" hasn't even begun yet, as they are doing an "initial exploratory phase" first.

I'm still not interested in VR in its current form(s), but industry-wide standards are pretty much always better than multiple competing solutions. Good going Khronos (and Valve).

I am getting lost here. SteamVR, OpenVR, OSVR, and now this!

Indeed, but that's the point of this, all the open standards should eventually combine/be replaced by this.

Should. Let's hope it works that way, and not this way.

Good development, and I hope it will be open source from the start.

Is Oculus involved too or are they keeping their stuff behind closed doors in contrast with Valve?

I bet it's the second option. They want to be the Apple of VR.

They need to have something fast, because Microsoft will almost definitly try to acquire this market and put their own proprietary solutions in place.
