Unity 5.6 beta with Vulkan is now available

By -

Update: The experimental Linux build of Unity 5.6 is now available.

Unity 5.6 beta is now available and it brings Vulkan into the main builds of the Unity engine, exciting times!

The blog post states that they have seen Vulkan give up to 60% better performance than OpenGL, so that's rather impressive!

The experimental Linux builds of the Unity editor have not yet been updated for 5.6, but it shouldn't be too long based on how quickly they have put them out recently.

It also includes SDL for the Linux version:

There's plenty of other features included, but those are the most important for us as Linux gamers to know about.

Would love to see Wasteland 2 and Satellite Reign updated to use the Vulkan renderer - those two could use a few extra FPS.

... as well as City: Skylines. Still the question remains if this initial Vulkan support will positively effect the performance...

Quoting: GuestAs much hate as Unity has received in the past, credit must be given where it's due. They've really come a long way in a relatively short time, and have had a hugely positive impact on Linux gaming as a whole. Let's hope it only gets better from here.

I used to be one of the haters. It came to a point where I had to reconsider a purchase if I found out was build on Unity, based on the poor experience thus far. Missing audio. Irrational mouse behaviour. A resolution mess on a multi-screen setup. Crashes. Bah - I got severly burnt.

But I hate no more. The improvements have been formidable and rapid, and there are multiple games out there now that proves the engines worth.
I no longer blame the engine, but the game developer.
