Squad [Steam, Official Site], the FPS game from Offworld Industries is showing signs that it might be coming over to Linux.

Only a day ago, SteamDB showed this:

The interesting thing is that the developers have said for a while they do want to support Linux, as it has been "an interesting side project" (source, source 2).

The game uses Unreal Engine and we know already how iffy their Linux support actually is. Hopefully they won't come across too many troubles.

About the game
Squad is a 50 vs 50 multiplayer first-person shooter that aims to capture combat realism through communication and teamplay, emphasizing both strong squad cohesion mechanics as well as larger scale coordination, tactics and planning. It features large open maps, vehicle-based combined arms gameplay, and player-constructed bases to create a heart-thumping, visceral gaming experience which mixes organized tactical multi-squad planning with split second decision-making in real-world scale firefights. I love the sound of it:
"I expect things like graphics shaders to break" - but still "people want to work on it"!
Sounds like they're curious. Sound like they don't mind facing bugs.

Would love it, bought it recently due to friends and family. Insurgencys great but I have been thinking about Squad these past weeks and linux support never happening and here I am seeing a post.

I've heard great things about Squad - people with actual stories of their experiences, as if it were somehow "real". Most of that is because of the in-game voice audio, which is, I believe, positional, such that members further away from you may/may not hear you, depending on how far away you are from them (and fall back to radio in such instances).

Excited to hear that it's a possibility for Linux, but I imagine they'll be facing some big challenges based on the amount of content in this game! Fingers crossed. Would love to buy/play this one - I've been looking for a proper squad-based shooter since I stopped playing Planetside 2 back in 2013.

As an Insurgency veteran I'd REALLY like to play it. For now I've heard there is a non-portable middleware standing in a way, so I don't think it's coming "soon". Still, I'm glad they are thinking about Linux version seriously :)

Yes, they copied this and a lot of other things from Arma.

maybe they are planing to remove or replace that middleware with something better so they are planing linux version of game.
Also their statements very promising that they are ready to challenge. that is the most important key of success.

isnt contents are data files so they dont need to be converted or be recoded or reworked etc.. they only need engine(its already done natively.) binary files. maybe custom libraries (which most of it dependency of unreal engine)
still im with you for crossing fingers.

The only game I desire, I've considered setting up a windows SSD just to buy it ...
