This action-adventure platformer Gunmetal Arcadia [official site], with smooth retro-styled art, was released earlier in the week.
With so many releases lately, it’s a little hard to keep up with things sometimes. J. Kyle Pittman, creator of Super Win the Game, released his latest game earlier in the week and it combines colorful retro visuals with tightly precise gameplay.
Gunmetal Arcadia is set in a world where elves of Arcadia are under attack by the hordes of a destructive empire and their survival is at stake. A prologue game, Gunmetal Arcadia Zero was released last year, and it was a pretty neat experience. I played a little and found that it was indeed everything it was billed as – retro gameplay and design with a few modern days sensibilities that meshed well with the experience. I haven’t had time to sit down and play it in more than small bursts yet but it pretty much nailed the aesthetics and playstyle of games such as Zelda II and the early Castlevanias.
Gunmetal Arcadia seems to build upon that, adding a few new elements such as more playable characters, plenty of new weapons, upgrades and rewards as well as veering off into a slightly more roguelite direction. And for those of you with nostalgia for old CRT monitors, the developer has expanded the graphical simulations for the effects of these devices, meaning that you can tweak and save your setup to get that feeling of staring at those old screens just right.
You can grab Gunmetal Arcadia on the Humble Store, Itch, or Steam.

Really nice 80s imitation. A lot of indie games go for pixel graphics simply because it is easier but Gunmetal actually appears to go for that console-on-a-CRT-television appearance.

No nostalgia at all for those horrible fishbowl screens and crappy analogue signals. But I'm sure these effects can be (partially) turned off and the game is no worse for it.

That's why it's called nostalgia ;)
The visual style definitely brings back memories for me. Nostalgia is quite a powerful thing.

Well, I certainly liked his other two games "You have to win the game" and "Super win the game." I will have to pick this up at some point. He has a skill at making adventure/platformers that reward practice and exploration.
I just turn off the CRT simulation, so it doesn't bother me. It is fun for the first 10 minutes, but my nostalgia doesn't include that particular thing.
YHTWTG is free, so everyone should try it!
Edit: Oh, darn. This is roguelike. Not my taste unfortunately. I hope it does well though, since the dev is great!

Gunmetal Arcadia Zero isn't roguelike as far as I know, so maybe try that one instead.

Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.
