Slightly earlier than the public, I now have access to a Linux build of Cossacks 3 [Steam, GOG, Official Site]. So far, it's not looking too bad at all.
It is still very much a Beta build though, as there's no sound at all in the game, but here's a lovely shot of it running smoothly on Linux for you:
Ignore the FPS counter in that shot, the game pauses on focus loss.
The developers have told me public access will be granted "soon". I know what you're thinking, but this time it might actually be sometime soon, since there is actually a build that runs now.
Performance so far seems okay, 70-130FPS on maximum settings with my i7/980ti combo, so for an RTS that's reasonable. It does generally hover well above 100FPS though and it feels smooth. Performance wise, it's hitting a good mark.

The global population limit has been increased to 32 000 units per map (2x bigger in comparison to the previous limit).

If you have an issue with the mouse (not moving / moving horrendibly slow):

that one helps ;-). I think POL actually provides a wine version with rawinput2 patch in the repos which you could try.
It's an issue with mouse acceleration being wrong implemented in EE1. I've done this with xinput commands setting mouse acceleration profiles too at some time, but the rawinput2 patch seems to work properly.
Didn't try in the past year though.
That is apparent even playing it under Windows. No matter what mouse DPI, EE just never felt right. Damn fun game, though.

Heh, heh. I did get a refund for the Windows version, and will wait for the long-awaited final Linux release. I hope I don't die before then:D.

I've been hanging out for this for like forever... Original Cossacks, and Napoleonic Wars were the only reason I had Wine a few desktops ago (Ubuntu 14.04, 15.04 and elementary freya and Ubuntu 15.10)... Best RTS ever! Wine recently broke a 16.04 install (dependency hell) so I gave up... To play this Natively would be a dream come true!
You got me curious, which of the 2 Ubuntu 16.04 broke?

Looks awesome, wish we could get another Myth style game though. I mean how many standard RTS games can one want?
For those that never played Myth, it plays much like an RTS, but you have a limited number of units per level, you can't just crank out new ones. All of the terrain (like it says in cossacks 3) is useful for determining tactics (place your archers up on a hill so they have further range, while your melee fighters run up to protect them), also your surviving soldiers gain ranks and skills, so you try harder to keep them alive.
I've found that most standard RTS games are just a matter of who can click faster, and knows the tech tree the best.
