Artifact, a new card game based on the Dota 2 universe has been announced by Valve as the latest kick in the balls for everyone waiting on Half-Life 3.

Here's the teaser:

We don't know too much about it, other than it being a card game and given that it's Valve it will likely be free to play to ensure it's success. I'm speculating there, since I haven't heard either way, but I would honestly be surprised if Valve made it pay to play. Valve have a huge user base to tap into, so free to play for them is pretty smart considering even small in-game purchases could end up netting them a lot of money.

There's no details on platforms yet either, so hopefully Valve don't suddenly forget to include a Linux version. I doubt they would, if they do, it really would make me question their plans for SteamOS & Linux.

Brad Muir who worked on titles like Brütal Legend and Massive Chalice announced on Twitter that he's been working on for a while:

I've been working on @PlayArtifact at Valve for a while now! Can't wait for you guys to play it! :D!

There's a new official Twitter account for the game, if you want to keep up with the latest on it. I will be following it closely to get more details when they come for you.

What do you think?

But they already made a card game called Steam.

Jumping on the train of games nobody wants. Actually nobody
wants to play Hearthstone but Blizzard throws money at it to make it look big. Maybe the same will happen here?

Quoting: LakortaHopefully not another MTG/Hearthstone clone

It not if what said here is true, the card game seem to actually be based on DOTA mechanic, instead of just been DOTA themed.

So to me it sound like they re-imagined DOTA for people who like DOTA mechanic, but would prefer a slower paced game and/or are not team player.

Well, thanks to Valve's statistics we will be able to see how many people play it.

I reckon it will sit constantly in the top 50 with ease, especially if it's free to play.

Might be in the minority judging from Reddit comments, but I love CCGs and I'm stoked that another one is probably going to come to Linux.

At first I was excited that Valve announced a new game... but now, I am disappoint.

If wanted to play cards, I'd play cards.

You're all jumping to conclusions here, but you should realize this isn't a "standalone" game or merely a new game being released.

This is more like a spinoff dota-lore money making machine and people or /r/dota2 have been reaquesting exactly this for a long while now ani Valve have been testing the lore waters with the latest battle pass campaign.

Being a standalone game will allow card game fans and people who are interested in watching compotitive dota without actually playing, yes this is a thing, to play this as a game without toxic teammates or long time commitment (dota matches may easily up to an hour or more and there are busy people who'd rather just have a quickie).

I'm not a huge fan of computer card games, but I've enjoyed some of them nonetheless. Regarding the card game hatred I'll only say this: Dota2 probably has more spectators (not players) than tf2's whole community at its peak together with all linux users and that's probably why Valve chose to go for this. They've proven how they're more into f2p/money-making than turning mods into games these days and that's compeletely fine.

I believe they'll offer linux support on day1 and hopefully before that if they're to release a beta client.

My only request would be that they also release android/ios versions untied to steam, if not having a client that's not tied to steam on the desktop but who am I kidding, just like Blizzard does. This could be a big thing for them and might bring people over to steam if they "play their cards right".

I am so glad that we will most likely have another card game to play on Linux. The DOTA theme will work very well for a card game. Out of over a 100 games that I have for Linux Faeria is the game that I have played the most. I cant wait to see more of Afrifact.

The gameplay that explains Day[9] sounds really interesting. I bet the game will be released in the next TI.

I prefer this one over HL3. Especially in Linux we are short on card games while we are not on FPS.
