Artifact, a new card game based on the Dota 2 universe has been announced by Valve as the latest kick in the balls for everyone waiting on Half-Life 3.
Here's the teaser:

We don't know too much about it, other than it being a card game and given that it's Valve it will likely be free to play to ensure it's success. I'm speculating there, since I haven't heard either way, but I would honestly be surprised if Valve made it pay to play. Valve have a huge user base to tap into, so free to play for them is pretty smart considering even small in-game purchases could end up netting them a lot of money.
There's no details on platforms yet either, so hopefully Valve don't suddenly forget to include a Linux version. I doubt they would, if they do, it really would make me question their plans for SteamOS & Linux.
Brad Muir who worked on titles like Brütal Legend and Massive Chalice announced on Twitter that he's been working on for a while:
I've been working on @PlayArtifact at Valve for a while now! Can't wait for you guys to play it! :D!

There's a new official Twitter account for the game, if you want to keep up with the latest on it. I will be following it closely to get more details when they come for you.
What do you think?
Online card games tend to fall into that almost scammy-feel of software just developed to make money.
If anyone has a chance to make an online TCG that doesn't come across as nothing more than a way to capitalize on people's addiction for collecting things just to milk them for everything they're worth without putting financial gain aside and making something that's actually fun, then I guess it's Valve.
But I still have doubts. This could be a big turning point for me in my opinion of Valve since lately they do seem to be heading in the direction of being just another big soulless company that pretends to care about gamers but doesn't really.
Quoting: kalinI hate card games.I like the idea of computer card games in general. What I don't like are the micro-transactions and/or hours of grinding to build a competitive deck so you don't get curb-stomped by an opponent.
Quoting: Mountain ManSo, kind of like real card games then. Except with the real ones it tends to be macro-transactions.Quoting: kalinI hate card games.I like the idea of computer card games in general. I'm not one of them as neither interest me, but at least it shows Valve haven't completely forgotten how to make games, right? :(
Quoting: veccher... when they said they were working on a new game i didn't expect half life 3, but i was hoping for something that i could like.
This.

wants to play Hearthstone but Blizzard throws money at it to make it look big. Maybe the same will happen here?
I don't know where you're getting that from. HS is definitely genuinely popular as you can see from how much it's watched on twitch, how many people actively participate on it's subreddit etc...
