Do you like what we do here? Well, you can help our continued operation by pledging to the Patreon or Paypal!
The support has been fantastic and you’re all amazing. We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all who have funded GOL in the past, are doing so currently or who may do in future. Thanks to you, this website has been running smoothly!
At time of writing, we’re not all that far off reaching our most important goal on Patreon! At a little over $400 extra a month we would be 100% financially secure for the foreseeable future. If we ever manage to reach that goal, it would be pretty incredible.
We did consider adverts again in the last few months, but decided after speaking to Patrons and thinking more on it, they just wouldn’t be worth it. For one, adverts from outside sources come with privacy issues with trackers and so on. They also pay so little now, considering the vast majority block them. I’ve seen a number of people say they wouldn’t mind them, but the drawbacks of having them are too great. Consider this message our continued commitment to not have a single advert on the website.
On a personal note: The website has succeeded even my wildest dreams, it’s such a great feeling to be right at the front of Linux gaming. Linux is special to me and I really want to see it succeed as a gaming platform. It has in many ways already succeeded, with it improving year over year, so I plan to carry on doing this for many more years to come—with your support!
Sales Page
On the subject of succeeding, we have managed to create a brand new Linux game Sales Page. The old one had numerous design flaws, all of which should have been corrected with this new and improved version. It’s actually hooking into a tweaked version of our old release calendar database, so we can add DLC tags and all sorts of nice things that the old sales page couldn’t do.
One major advancement over the old one, is that you can type a name into the searchbar and it will offer suggestions, click one and it will reload the information and display the sales found for that name. It works really well too!
Each game on sale will list the stores besides it, the first on the left is always the cheapest! Making it easy to tell which one to go for at a glance.
Bundles and individual sales are split, to make it easier too. Major bundles are listed right at the top, for easy pickings!
We are currently grabbing sales automatically from: Steam, Humble Store, GOG and GamersGate. I’m hoping to roll out itch.io sales soon, but their sales feed mixes all currencies together which is a bit of a mess.
I'm also looking at adding in a wishlist feature, so each time it detects a sale and it's in your wishlist, to send you a notification. Haven't worked that out yet, so that's still to come.
We also have a merch store, where you can buy t-shirts, hoodies, cups and so on to help support us as well. Something which was a common request. Our Samsai decided to check out a hoody—looking stylish! Find our little store here.
If you’re ever curious about what we’ve been doing, we have this handy page right here. It shows a bunch of statistics, like who’s done what.
If you have any suggestions on something for us to write about, a feature for the website directly or anything else feel free to email any time. You can use our email form, or just shoot one directly to [email protected] (feel free to pass that email around to developers like sweet candy).
Support links again: Patreon or Paypal!
As usual, we won’t post directly here about asking for support for another couple months. Thank you everyone, happy gaming!

You're doing a great job, thanks.

Any particular reason why you want one ?
I feel that the Patreon donation levels can be improved. There is a huge gap between Premium Plus and "Sin made me do this one". Creating levels at $15 a month and $25 a month may get some existing patreon's to upgrade. The $500 and $1000 is a bit too high and the names of it makes the site look unseemly. Those are just my thoughts. The super high tiers are basically a joke, i don't expect anyone to actually use them. However, I admit they are a bit on the silly side so I will likely remove them so we dont give off the wrong idea.
As for adding some reasonable higher tiers, that's very difficult for a site like this considering 99% of what we do everyone has access to. Existing Patrons have already said clearly they dont want anyone locked out of anything more and im quite against any sort of timed articles for higher tiers.
If you have any nice ideas do let me know! :)
1) is it still in beta right? Can't see it in the site menu
2) tried it with a smartphone: can't check the "no DLC" checkbox (but maybe I'm just a bit clumsy)
3) are you going to continue the articles about Bundles and Wednesday Sales? I hope yes, they are great!
Well, other than that, this site is wonderful. You are the reason I'm still on Linux and the reason my wallet is empty: I should hate you for this but I can't. Scrooge McDuck is looking at me with shame.
About the higher tiers rewards, how about some original merch stuff that you do not sell for everyone? Like signed things or GOL pants (with "GNU/Balls" on the front:D) or a GOL Mug filled with salt by Samsai himself.
Be creative with that merch store!
Also, about it, why I can't see GOL penguin in there? I want a plush of him and stickers!

It needs more visibility in my opinion.
I don't wanted to donate with Patreon, so thank you for Paypal Support, i donated. ;)
About the Sales page:Very much beta! So much beta I should put a beta sticker on it.

3) are you going to continue the articles about Bundles and Wednesday Sales? I hope yes, they are great!Yep, the sales page is there for anyone who wants to make use of it. It will not replace sales articles, just an additional service for us to offer to the community.

As for the official GOL penguin, that should come in future :)

Liam, have you took a look at Liberapay ?I have been meaning to speak to them, to check if we are a valid project for them. Will make a note of it. Bug me about it if you don't hear from me about it.

Pledge done a week ago.Pledges are taken on the 1st of each month, so it's usually a few days after then I go through the list :)
I don't understand how to get supporter badge :P
You're doing a great job, thanks.
Have you seen what https://flattr.com has done with Flattr 2.0?Last time I used flattr, we had them up for quite a long time and they paid out like £10 once during that time. It just wasn't worth it. The problem with all these smaller payment systems is that we need to hit the threshold on each of them to get a payment, plus I then need to add in the time expense for dealing with taxes for each additional revenue stream and it can get a little messy.

Don't you like medal ? :D
I think seeing more badges boost people motivation for pledging (it worked on me).

Yeah, Firefox on Android.
Yeah, it's the same issue with our login page. Firefox mobile for some reason keeps breaking checkboxes, unsure as to what the issue is exactly. Been investigating it for the past few weeks. Still looking into it.2) tried it with a smartphone: can't check the "no DLC" checkbox (but maybe I'm just a bit clumsy)Is that with Firefox mobile? Works in chrome on Android.
Yeah, Firefox on Android.
The ads are ok, as long as they are loaded from GOL servers without tracking js. Image with referer url could work.
There's always the hard choice of what kind of ads are acceptable and don't conflict with articles.
There's also the additional work involved, including lower income compared to ad networks.

Yes, I understand. However, if we don't give these smaller systems a chance, they can never grow. It seems to me that they tried hard to have the whole functionality hassle-free for both the creator and the reader with Flattr 2.0. And I quite like their system, it's much better than Patreon - you have a single pool of money that is distributed proportionally how much you use different websites. You don't need to keep track whether you still visit some site or still want to support that particular person, if you stop going there (and start going somewhere else), the person stops receiving money (and somebody else starts). Is including these smaller revenue streams in tax return that much work? By the way, GOL already receives flattrs from me on each my visit since last month - they're just nullified because GOL owner is not registered.
