If you're like me and you love the idea of Battle Royale games, yet you're finding none of them on Linux, Islands of Nyne [Official Site] might be one to keep an eye on.

I discovered it by accident today and I hastily shot a tweet to the developer asking about Linux support, it turns out it's already mentioned in their FAQ when talking about platforms:

Linux and Mac compatibility is not out of the question.

That's certainly nothing solid to really go on, but it's better than the situation with PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS where the developer firmly said "There is currently no plans to bring PUBG to Linux.". I'm highlighting this for an important reason, and do correct me if I'm wrong, but I have yet to find a single proper Battle Royale game that supports Linux (I am aware of Go 4 The Kill).

About the game:

A community driven First-Person-Only Battle Royale game with a core focus on fast-paced, skill-driven gameplay set in a sci-fi inspired universe where anything is possible. Drop in, find a weapon, and stay alive… for only 1 can emerge victorious. The rest must die!

It's being made with Unreal Engine 4, so Linux support is at least possible thanks to that.

It's a little on the older side, but here's the initial trailer they put up last year. Most other videos they've put up don't show much actual gameplay:

It will be interesting to see if they do ever do Linux support, but I will keep searching until we find the first developer to bring a proper Battle Royale game to Linux.

Quoting: GustyGhost- New studio

- No history of previous Linux work
The vast amount of games we write about are from new studios nowadays, there's new games coming along all the time.
Quoting: GustyGhost- Developement through Windows
Also, the majority of games we write about are developed on Windows, that's a completely invalid point as far as I'm concerned. Please don't stoop to that level of zealotry.
Quoting: GustyGhost- Huge emphasis on dramatic trailers, visuals and art (ask me about "ARK syndrome"\)
Trailers are supposed to be eye-catching, duh, they're a marketing tool.

Quoting: GustyGhost- Equates platform "Windows" to "PC"
Again, so do the vast majority of developers we write about, it's a never-ending battle that one, but again, a rather invalid point as it means nothing in regards to what they actually do.

Quoting: liamdaweI get it, people would rather see "x game confirmed" constantly, but I am personally excited by BR games. Apart from that one CSGO mod, no other has even said they're thinking about it. So to me, this is interesting.

Honestly, I don't think Battle Royale genre is sustainable for startup companies, if not all. It is going to be a MOBA-like situation which 2 games (Lol vs Dota 2 / PUBG vs Fortnite) will keep dominating the genre and regardless of the size of new games, they won't be able attract continues attention. That happened with countless MOBAs and will happend with many BR titles. I rather would like to see Epic blesses us with Linux release of Fortnite which is highly unlikely...

A bunch of the posts that show there aren't even related ;)

If we highlight games were developers are thinking on it, it's also a good chance for users to let them know they're interested.

Wildcard did make a push for a while for a Battle Royale style version of ARK. However, it has mostly been abandoned as I remember reading comments about them wanting to re-focus the team on Ark: Survival Evolved full released.

I actually really enjoyed the mechanics in this Battle Royale, as you had some strategic choices in how you wanted to play to win the game. For example, you could go straight to taming a few really strong dinos (spino or rex). You could go the tech route and craft your way to good weapons. If you take out a tribe, their dinos are disowned and you could claim them for your tribe. So, strategically you could quickly tech to some decent weapons, then try to take out the players going the dino taming route before their dinos are fully tamed/strong.

I really hope some of these BR style games start incorporating more choices than find weapons, kill opponents. Like especially a crafting mechanism. I haven't played much in this genre though since almost all aren't on Linux. So who knows? Maybe I am just not picking up on strategic depth in the popular ones through streams/videos.

Oh yeah, also this game, but I didn't play it:

Graphics remind me "CryEngine 5" But UE4 is also ok. But it seems its only so-called support for linux. I dont think it will release for linux or mac ever.
Trending genres are hard to success with. Many new genre games failed already.
