We've known for a while that Virtual Programming were porting MXGP3 - The Official Motocross Videogame to Linux, now it seems it may be closer to release.
Yesterday, the Linux and Mac content appeared on SteamDB which is a clear sign that work is progressing on the port. VP have been pretty silent about it, so we have no idea when it will actually release. Good to know it's still coming though!
A good choice to bring to Linux, since there's nothing else really like it on Linux right now. It features full gamepad support, single-player as well as online multiplayer and it does look like a lot of fun.
Direct Link
The bike customization sounds like it could be interesting with 300 different components and I do love being able to customize my ride.
Will you be picking up a copy when it releases for Linux?
...yeah...I know all Linux ports have a certain amount of wrapping. Except...VP shipped Windows binarys for saints row. That is taking it too far IMO.VP doesn't port...they just wrap. I won't be buying this. This type of stance is really silly. Do you buy Feral games? They're not exactly that different, they have their own special layer as well. As do likely many ports.
VP's ports like other ports are supported, mostly work well, they run like other games and so on.
Facts are, Linux is not currently profitable enough for anyone to consider entirely rewriting a rendering engine to support OpenGL/Vulkan.
I didn't like the Witcher 2 and while Bioshock was good I can live without it.VP doesn't port...they just wrap. I won't be buying this.
Yes , but they gave us Bioshock Infinite and Witcher 2 which they are very high profiled games.
The performance isn't the problem. As said many times, they are. They don't run Windows binaries, they are fully compiled for Linux. And wrapping source with source is actually a design pattern tought to software engineers.
...and it makes NO DIFFERENCE speed wise as to whether you execute x86 asm that MSVC compiled, or x86 asm that GCC/clang compiled. I have no idea why people cannot understand this.
Nah I'm good but thanks. If it's got windows binaries I'm not touching it with a 10 foot pole.VP doesn't port...they just wrap. I won't be buying this.
So? VP support Linux gaming, and bring us games we might otherwise not get.
Get over it.

I don't get "Get over it." here either. Nothing to get over. All fine. It's not like there's starving if one chooses not to run Windows binaries. At least not me. I hope Luke is fine with his choices as well.

Yeah. I'd expect people on a Linux website to be a bit more understanding about people's ideological views even if they don't agree with them. Not seeing that right now XD.Nah I'm good but thanks. Which ported game you can't live without it?
Shadow of Mordor , Life is Strange or F1 2017?
There is not a single third party ported game on Linux that you cannot live without it.
Tbh the only AAA Linux games that interest me are tomb raider and civilization. None of the other games that have been ported interest me. There's also only 2 games on my porting wish list. Skyrim and dark souls. I just play more inide games than anything else.I didn't like the Witcher 2 and while Bioshock was good I can live without it.VP doesn't port...they just wrap. As you say, the stock game isn't very good graphically, you need to download user made skins and tracks for it to get somewhat pleasing to the eye.The most realistic motocross game, MX Simulator, has been Linux-native since 2008.Just had a look at MX Simulator, not something I've heard about before today. Graphically it's quite bad, but hey graphics don't make a game. Looks like it might be worth taking a further look into, thanks.
All others are glossy-looking arcade games for wee children in comparison... :)
The bike physics on the other hand are as good as it gets, especially the stability engine.
I've been out of the loop for a few years now but I saw recently that JLV, the sole developer, has implemented online erode, i.e. the track heightmaps are changed from bike tire input in real time to form ruts and bumps, which has always been the holy grail of Mxsim online racing.
It has a fairly high skill threshold in the beginning but if you've ever rode a real mx bike the ride feeling is unbeatable in Mxsim.
It's hilarious that there are people who actually give a shit what system the binaries are compiled on!
You really need to learn more about your (potential) customers.
We're not using Linux because we're ordinary.
Our specialties are of different kind, but you sure have to expect specialties.

Seriously, you're just being an ideological fuckwit if that makes you shit the bed.
It's clearly not that unreasonable. Feral is a much more popular and widely used porting house who has never once shipped Windows binaries. There's also aspyr who doesn't port much but they have some big stuff like civ and again no Windows binaries. I'm not complaining too much about the libraries/layers used. I'm aware it's a port...not a rewrite but shipping binaries for a different platform is going too far especially seeing as the other two notable porting houses don't do it.It's hilarious that there are people who actually give a shit what system the binaries are compiled on!

The thing is, the games industry is not going to cater to your, quite frankly unreasonable whims. If you start demanding dumb stuff like this, they will choose to ignore you. Remember you are less than 1% of the market - you need them more than they need you!
And yes, I'm aware this is not going to be a popular statement... but it is the truth. If you burn them they will simply pull their hand out of the fire.

First things first: You're not going to gain anything by calling stuff dumb.
The rest seems to be based on some missunderstandings.
* I'm not starting anything. I never wanted Windows binaries on Linux. (The wrapper discussion has already been a thing with The Witcher 2, so I wonder how you possibly could have missed it.) So, btw, you're not losing anything you ever had.
* I don't demand anything. You're as free to offer what you like as I am to take it or not.
* I don't need more from the gaming industry than I got. I'm already in a position where there's way more good games than I've got time to play (which is only in a smaller part based on the fact I got way less time nowadays).
* And finally - please correct me if I should be wrong here - the vast majority of the gaming industry supporting Linux is not using binary wrappers for recent games (only for older ones). So I cannot see this will be a problem for them... I cannot see you talking for "the games industry".

Seriously, you're just being an ideological &§"$&§ if that makes you $§&§ the bed.
I'd propose you start behaving like a grown up.
You're welcome.
You don't need to follow my reasoning,
this is your decision just as well as mine is mine,
but you need to be respectful to other people.
While I'm on the subject with jaycee I do fully agree with your comments regarding respects and communication. Thanks a lot for keeping it civilized!Seriously, you're just being an ideological &§"$&§ if that makes you $§&§ the bed.

I'm all fine with civilized disagreement.
I can see why many (probably most) Linux gamers won't have the same opinion as me,
and I can of course see why jaycee is frustrated about such opinions about VP's ports.
See more from me
