Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a rather popular punishing climbing game, made as a tribute to Jazzuo's 2002 B-Game classic 'Sexy Hiking' and it now has a Linux build.

Originally, you needed to opt into a Beta to access it. Going by the posts in the announcement thread on Steam, it seems you might not need to opt into anything now.

About the game:

A game I made
For a certain kind of person

To hurt them.

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a punishing climbing game, a homage to Jazzuo's 2002 B-Game classic 'Sexy Hiking'. You move the hammer with the mouse, and that's all there is. With practice, you'll be able to jump, swing, climb and fly. Great mysteries and a wonderful reward await the master hikers who reach the top of the mountain.

To quote Jazzuo himself: "The hiking action is very similar to way you would do it in real life, remember that and you will do well".

Features:

  • Climb up an enormous mountain with nothing but a hammer and a pot.
  • Listen as I make philosophical observations about the problem at hand.
  • Between 2 and ∞ hours of agonizing gameplay, depending. The median time to finish for my playtesters was 5 hours, but the mean was closer to ∞.
  • Lose all your progress, over and over.
  • Feel new types of frustration you didn't know you were capable of.
  • Magical reward awaits hikers who reach the top.

Currently, the normal ending doesn't seem to work on Linux. The developer said the third-party code they use for it isn't supported on Linux. So do keep that in mind if you intend to purchase it and test.

Find it on Humble Store and Steam.

Isn't life hurting enough?
Yeah, I don't get why anyone plays this.

I'd rather shoot myself in the foot and would probably gain more from the pain than from playing this ... "game".

Life is just like a game,
First you have to learn rules of the game,
And then play it better then any one else.

i had this game with a previous humble monthly, and if you are smart enough it is pretty easy to cheat, if you do not want the punishing aspect of the game and just want to climb the mountain without restarting every time you fall.

Big frustrations == even bigger sense of pride and accomplishment™ when you overcome them. It's like releasing your inner bipolar disorder.

I do understanding doing something hard and thus being so proud when having beaten it. I just need some advancement, I guess. And new obstacles, not the same over and over again. My example would be Portal Stories: MEL in hard mode. Man, how I was hating it - and loved to beat it! But starting from beginning every time sounds too frustrating for me. (Although it was the only thing we had back in the 80ies... ;) )

I like the humour. Won't buy it still.

Yeah. The "me" that would have bought and "enjoyed" this experience died somewhere between N+ and Guitar Hero. Although I'm somewhat reliving that frustration with Dead Cells... that game at least mixes in some constant satisfaction which keeps me coming back. My days of Super Hexagon and the like are over.

Side note - this reminds me of that "Trials" game I used to play years ago. It was a free java game, I think? Vaguely similar to this - frustrating attempts to get your bike over crazy big obstacles. Fun, but also induced an almost feral rage when you cocked up a manoeuvre and ended up further back than you started out.
