Egosoft have officially announced their latest space sim X4: Foundations is going to launch on November 30th, although the status of the Linux build isn't fully confirmed.

When asked about it, they simply told us "The plan is to launch the Linux Beta at release, but we have to see if that will work out.".

The announcement was accompanied by their new trailer:

They also released a longer gameplay trailer at the same time, which is an interesting way to do it I suppose. It's a game I definitely want to try out, as it does sound quite impressive. The ability to simply get out of your ship, walk around and climb aboard another ship and continue exploring sounds fun.

Egosoft are claiming it to be the "most dynamic X universe ever", with other races in the game free to build and expand, with a lot of the same options as players which should be interesting. It will offer multiple starting points with different characters, each with their own set of relationships, technology, ships and so on too.

The only current store they've confirmed is Steam. If they do manage to get a Linux build out, we will take a look for sure.

Quoting: TheRiddickMaybe people should make sure they can afford kids before having them also? :)

Not like the planet is running out of people anytime soon is it?
Don't be an asshole. What is wrong with you? Dogpile on a guy because he has kids and therefore doesn't spend as much money on toys as you? You are a sad creature.

This game makes me want to play EVE Online. Can anyone compare?

Quoting: TheSyldatOkay legit tiny little question.

Does one need to plug in a flight stick for those or are they playable with just keyboard and mouse ?

I doubt that it will work with regular controller as well so I won't even ask.

I'd like to get into one of those but I'm always worried that I'll have to retort to a flight stick in order to fully enjoy them.

Unfortunately the X games are notoriously bad in terms of flightstick support and configuration.
So yes, you are good to go with keyboard and rodent.

Sadly if I recall correctly and maybe the situation has evolved since then, although SDL 2 , is real good when it comes to regular old gamepad in terms of Flight Stick sucks at making the support and the integration a straight forward affair.
Again it may have evolved since then but when I talked about the potential support of flightsticks under linux to the devs of Polynomial 2 they answered to me that sadly SDL 2 wasn't exactly cooperative in that regard . Hence why there is none to be found in the linux version of the game actually. And by the way yes we're still talking with Alex and Dima and well life is a bitch they're both sick as a horse and can't get around to code more content for it. But they manage to squeeze some juice here and there.

Quoting: pete910But I will answer, Having children is only relevant to ourselves, so yes in the eyes of the world/corporations it makes no difference what you or I, the guy down the street does . That is what I am getting at.
And that's where you were wrong in the first place and you were being a jackass to the person saying that those pre-req were steep by saying and I quote "in what world is a 970 a steep ask", if you don't want folks to give you a public buttslap maybe don't be so dismissive and diminishing to your fellow humans.

TL : DR if you don't want to be ripped appart all jaws out , maybe don't bite .

Wind ya neck in !
Please tell how was I wrong? The i5 which is stated as minimum even lost to AMD's bulldozer line in some benches so to say it's in the high end/super computer class is plain wrong.

How was I being "dismissive" ? You assumed I had not done my part financially to support my children as to fund my computers! In essence you was being a assumptive know all.

So to quote "stop being a dismissive and diminishing jackass"

Quoting: TheSyldatX games are long term investment not just for the players but also for the dev team.

Totally agree on that. X3 is how old at this point and is still being actively played and modded and still often is in the top 5 or 10 of most people's "Best Space Games" list...

This game and the similar, yet different, but altogether excellent Helium Rain coming out in the same year. I can hardly dream of a better time to be a space games fan on Linux.

Quoting: GuestNot comparable. A few years ago the gpu market was more down to earth. These last 2-3 years gpu prices are ridiculously inflated due to ram prices, cryptomining, China growth, and newer processes being more difficult. It is RIDICULOUS to demand a 970 as a MINIMUM requirement. That card is more than midrange, it is borderline high range. At least from a price standpoint, if you are buying new. It is beyond retarded to demand such a strong pc as a MINIMUM requirement, because your potential market shrinks to a tiny percentage of PC users...

Also, these are the MINIMUM requirements. No game runs properly on MININUM, ever. You need at least the recommended to have a passable experience with a game. And judging by Egosoft's history of terribly unoptimized games, i am not hopeful. As for the graphics of the game, they are nothing special. Space graphics are easier to look amazing anyway.
Again it's indeed generally poorly optimized at first but they improve optimization over time. Even X-Rebirth performs way better now then it used to perform back then. Again the important part of my message was that Egosoft still maintains and continues to support their game waaay past the first few months of release.
