Egosoft's latest space sim, X4: Foundations, is releasing today for Windows. Originally, it was to get a Linux beta at release but it seems that's being delayed further.
Speaking on their official forum, the developer said this:
I'm afraid we are very much focused on getting the initial launch completed successfully and haven't planned in detail exactly when we will get the Linux beta started. As I said in my previous reply, please bear with us while the dust settles and we get a clearer picture of when we will be able to put some time into preparing it. Given that information, you can assume that it's now pretty certain that it won't actually be on the same day as the Windows launch.
The good news, is that they still seem to be doing a Linux version. There's no hint of it being cancelled, but it's still a little disappointing that we won't even get a beta release for what could be some time.
There's always an upside though I guess, when the Linux version does arrive hopefully any major gameplay issues would have already been solved. Egosoft didn't have the best time with X Rebirth, so hopefully they took plenty of feedback on when making X4.
It will be available across Humble Store, GOG and Steam.
Hat tip to SuperTux.

Reading the reviews for the game I'm not in any kind of hurry to buy this, I wanted an improved version of X3, not an improved version of X: Rebirth.
It's no Rebirth (apart from buggy release, which works in our favour having to wait), I recommend checking actual footage from the like of ObsidianAnt rather than Steam reviews.
From what I read in the reviews, it sounds like the X3 fans are pleased with the gameplay, while they managed to keep some of the good features from X: Rebirth. Most of the negative reviews are related to performance. It seems like it's a buggy mess right now.

It feels like a fusion of X2 and X3, with a handful of overhauled mechanics from XR. I'm pretty damn happy with it so far.
It's a bug-ridden mess right now, but that's how every egosoft game is at launch. They're usually pretty good about fixing their products, so I'm not worried.

Doesn't sound like it's coming any time soon. :-|
Well, if their Linux dev is still the same guy they hired prior to Albion Prelude, you don't have to worry, he's really good.
Plus, he moved across to the core dev team and will be making sure that Linux and Mac ports are not made difficult. And, of course, using Vulkan also helps on Linux.
I like their games and will continue to buy them, but not until it works in a supported fashion on Linux.
