Another one shown off during The Game Awards, Double Fine have now shown off the first official trailer for Psychonauts 2.

Originally funded on Fig, where Double Fine managed to get almost four million in total we've been waiting a while for this. Linux is a confirmed platform and I've no doubt Double Fine will deliver the Linux build.

Here's a little more about it:

Psychonauts 2 tells the story of Razputin Aquato, a gifted acrobat with psychic powers, as he fulfills his life-long goal of becoming an international psychic super-spy. In other words, a Psychonaut. Raz joins the Psychonauts at a dangerous time: a mole has infiltrated the organization and is planning to resurrect history's most cruelly powerful psychic villains. Not knowing who to trust, Raz must dive into the history of the Psychonauts, and that of his own family, to fight the demons of their shared past.

Set to release sometime in 2019, no solid date has been given.

I also have a confession to make, I have still never played Psychonauts. Am I mad? Should I seriously set time aside to play it? I've no doubt you will tell me so in the comments.

I would recommend either playing psychonauts 1, or watch a let's play for the story, before psychonauts 2. While I think psychonauts 2 will be fun stand alone, I think it will be even more fun if you know the back story.

Context is important, but not necessarily when you're asking "Is it fun to play in [current year]".

Pong is a very important game, when taken into context. The original Dragon Warrior is, too. They were both achievements of their time, and quite important. In context. But that doesn't make either of them any fun from a modern standpoint. Indeed, both are pretty damn tedious for anything more than a short session. And don't even get me started on the incessent grind that is Pokémon Blue.

Context, in this case, does mean you can appreciate the achievement it was at the time. But the question of "Can I have fun if I play this right now, before the sequel comes out?" doesn't rely on it.

For me, computer games can be art. Psychonauts is art. You can't completely appreciate art without context.

Well, anything made by man can per definition be called art, so the term is basically completely hollow. A hi-fi enthusiast will call an amplifier "art". A musical instrument can be art in itself. Or a car. A cake. It simply boils down to the eye of the beholder. But I'm glad you stated it can be art. Cause I'd call most games simply consumer products.

But playing a game with the "context" (or rather, "excuse") of it being from another age - if that excuse is necessary in order to enjoy it, well then I rather call that session a history lesson. There are other motivations required for playing the game than the game itself.

There are old games that indeed do stand the test of time, usually due to a genius concept. Take good old Tetris. We still make clones of that game. It's crazy. I don't think we will ever stop playing Tetris. That's an old game that needs no excuse to be played. No context needed. Nobody are saying any of my earlier mentioned excuses while playing it. Why? Cause it still is a good game.

Then we got other games, like Dragons Lair, who made nothing less of a tidal wave in the coin-up gaming world back in the days, offering game animations like we really had never even been close to seeing before. But as a game? It's total crap. Not worth playing today, at all. It's technically just a series of video clips where you choose the next clip at critical moments (animations originally stored on a video laser disc inside the console). A game that totally, utterly has not stood the test of time at all. Does it have historical significance? But of course. It's a milestone, no less. But that's really not an excuse for playing it today - unless you want a history lesson.

Well, the fact that I don't think Psychonauts is a bad game probably makes the difference.

i don't trust double fine one bit....
they don't now how to manage money or resources

i'm ready too believe there is a linux version when it is released, not a day before that

Winning the game isn't too annoying, but getting 100% is, although I guess getting 100% in any game with collectibles is annoying.

That's the re-release. Remaster might be a strong word here, but if I remember correctly, it supports more resolutions than the original with some assorted tweaks here and there.
