Here’s one that we missed in the holiday scramble. Following an alpha release, the penguin-themed platformer has its first big update in two years.
For those of you not familiar with it, SuperTux [Official Site] is a free and open source platformer in the vein of the 2D Mario games. Expect to jump on enemies’ heads, activate switches and platforms, and navigate through a number of levels and worlds before Tux can be reunited with the kidnapped Penny.
This is a game that’s been in development for quite a few years and the latest 0.6.0 release adds a few bells and whistles. Here’s a few of the changes:
- Complete redesign of the icy world and forest world
- Complete revamp of our rendering engine, the game should be much faster than it was previously
- A few graphics have been updated, and effects have been added
- Official Linux binaries
I played a little of this one myself and, while it’s still got a long way to go insofar polish is concerned, it’s fun to play. The controls are responsive and the platforming certainly feels right. While the game borrows a little too heavily from the Super Mario Bros. series for me to be won over fully, there's enough twists and mechanics like switches that keep it from feeling like a mere penguin-themed clone. The story mode features quite a few levels but if you get bored of those you can always download more community-designed ones or try your hand at designing some of your own with the built-in level editor.
There’s still a long road ahead for SuperTux and the developers are looking for more graphic designers and programmers. If you’re interested in helping out, you can find out more here.
If you want to give the cute little penguin platformer a try, you can download it from the official site or it may already be in your distro’s repository.
Ahhh one of the first games I ever played on Linux! In fact for quite a while along with super tux kart was the ONLY game I played heheh. Good times :D
That's because back then, these were pretty much the only games that ran on Linux at all, haha!
Feels like an eternity ago, doesn't it?
It's still a cute little game.

I used to play that one. Never got into Super Tux really, although I don't think I was playing as many games in general at the time (and had a Playstation) so I didn't really miss not having PC games much.
It looks ages ago indeed, i wonder if we will be just as amazed in the next 5 years :)
this project had its time, but now it should just fade.
the code and the engine are old, maintaining it and updating it is troublesome and harder than it should, and the assets arent great either.
there is not much space for easy code re-use and improvment.
i think we should remake it on godot instead of keep working on the old code base, replace the assets with new ones, and have 2 separate sets of levels, the classic ones and new levels more polished and curated.

Sounds like you have yourself a project! If not, why complain about how others spend their time?

In my case works very good and levels tested are much complex than regular mario games

did you ever heard of mario maker?
that thing that people actually care about and are creating millions of levels for?
with more power ups and traps?
an proprietary software that gives end users (people who dont know how to code) more freedom than this game?
i dont think this will change if we keep reinventing the whell instead of cooperate, remake the game on godot will be a lot of effort in the short term, but the benefits should pay itself in the long run.
its a shame i cant help on it right now
Oh and the name doesn't mean anything but coincidentally could be pronounced as "Buttery" which suits me just fine.
