Aspyr Media managed to get the latest update to Sid Meier's Civilization VI for Linux approved and it's out now.

While it was again not ideal that Linux (and Mac) gamers were left waiting, this time wasn't so bad. The Great Works and Trade Update was released on April 11th "addressing issues that have emerged in the community following the release of the Antarctic Late Summer Game Update" and we now have it.

Thankfully, this means the Linux version is once again able to play online cross-platform with both Windows and Mac.

What's in the latest update? From the release notes:

  • Great Works no longer use Drag and Drop. They have been returned to the previous functionality of “click to move.”
  • Addressed the following trade exploits reported within the community:
    • Fixed: User could trade low Gold-per-turn for high Gold-per-turn with AI players, essentially “stealing” large amounts of Gold.
    • Fixed: AI was not valuing Strategic resources correctly. You could sometimes trade 1 iron for 18 iron. Once you offered over 20 Strategic Resources, the value from the AI would drop to 1 Gold regardless of quantity. It now properly levels off.
    • Fixed: AI would give the player hundreds of Gold for a single Luxury Resource. While AI can give a healthy amount (Gold per turn plus some additional Gold) if they really need the Resource, it should rarely if ever be 10+ Gold per turn.
    • Fixed: The AI would give the player hundreds of Gold for very low quantities of Diplomatic Favor, regardless of whether they were pursuing a Diplomatic Victory or not. This should now be back in line with everything else, with offers weighted accordingly if the AI is chasing a Diplomatic Victory.

In this case it seems the update likely took Aspyr Media by a little surprise causing the slight delay, as they did previously say "Simultaneous releases are always the goal!" as previous major waiting was due to nasty bugs.

You can grab Sid Meier's Civilization VI from Humble Store and Steam.

This is an outstanding story. All these trade exploits were brought to public attention by Spiffing Brit, in his YouTube video on Civilization 6 exploits. I have to wonder if it's the beginning of an era, where it's not only competitive games that receive balance patches..
