Oh Psyonix, what have you done? Rocket League recently had the loot boxes removed, with Blueprints and an Item Shop instead so you see exactly what you get but the pricing is terrible.

As someone who has hundreds of hours in Rocket League, Psyonix really did disappoint with the big update recently. It could have been handled a lot better, but it came across as incredibly greedy. It's a game you have to pay for, yet they wanted us to spend a ridiculous amount of money on Credits for some of the items.

Yesterday, they put out a news post to discuss it and they've made some changes. The base price of rarities and the specials have been reduced down to:

Rare: 50-100 Credits Most Paint Colors: 50-200 additional Credits
Very Rare: 100-200 Credits Burnt Sienna: 0 additional Credits
Import: 300-500 Credits Titanium White: 100-500 additional Credits
Exotic: 700-800 Credits Special Editions: 200-400 additional Credits

Compare with the actual price of Credits again (which haven't changed):

  • 500 Credits - £3.84
  • 1100 Credits - £7.69
  • 3,000 Credits - £19.23
  • 6,500 Credits - £38.48

Taking the changes into account, the Painted Car Body I showed off in the previous article has been reduced from 1,000 to 700 Credits as just one example of it making quite a big difference in the cost.

Well, it's a little less terrible now. Still not good enough overall though, just to put this point through enough this is a paid game. If it goes free to play, fair enough (and I expect it to next year) but at those prices they're still likely not going to pull much in as it's painfully high for single cosmetic items.

If you could perhaps convert a bunch of unwanted Blueprints into Credits, it would be slightly less terrible again. I fully expect plenty more drama around this as they continue to tweak it.

Rocket League is available from the Humble Store and Steam.

Oh, what a totally unexpected move.

Step 1: Come up with completely ridiculous prices. This does not happen on accident, no matter what anyone tries to tell you. They knew 100% what they were doing.

Step 2: Get shitstorm.

Step 3: Reduce the prices a little bit, pretending that you "listened to feedback". Make no mistake, this was planned from before step 1.

Never seen this pattern before...

I don't say this hasn't happened here (I don't know), but ruling out stupdity is... stupid.
People do stupid stuff all the time, it's not all big plans.

Stuff like this, when money is involved, doesn't happen on accident.
It's not some random decision of a single person who just happened to pull some random numbers out of their bottoms, these prices were planned, had to pass multiple heads and they all said "ok".
Prices are not something anyone decides on lightly. Least of all a team on a big project like this.

I mean, I guess there's a 0.00001% chance that nobody involved thought these prices would be a tad bit high.
Maybe they are all coming from Korean MMO backgrounds - absurd prices for in-game stuff is culturally accepted in Korea for some reason.

Agreed but with one amendment: they were just probing what prices they can get away with and apparently the sales at the high prices were too low, so they're rolled out some cuts to see what happens. I don't think they would give much thought about the complaining if the money checked out.

This IS stupid. Or very clever, depending on your morals, I guess...
But it is stupidity born from greed, that's my point. It is done on purpose, not by accident.

IMHO, things are still so expensive. I brought the game, it wasn't cheap and I still have to pay this much to buy an item. I got a black market goal explosion and it costs me 2200 credits. That's unimaginable. Anyways, they should decrease even more their prices otherwise i'm not buying it anytime soon

My point is that we don't know. Managers don't always have this cool/evil plan, sometimes they simply make mistakes. And it's not too seldom either, if you ask me. Managers are humans, too.
