I adventured far and wide, clicking across page after page of unique and often very weird games on itch.io until a little sparkle caught my eye. That spark was Isleward, a free and open source roguelike MMO.

The developer claims it's "the world's only open source, moddable, roguelike MMO"—a bold claim. There's been a few classic-styled roguelike MMOs before, however being free and open source like this with cross-platform play in your browser (and downloads for Linux, macOS and Windows) is certainly refreshing.

Somewhat early-on in development right now, playable and quite interesting but not finished. It does see regular releases, there's people playing it and with another release to come soon that will bring big features in player item trading it's one to keep an eye on.

Building an MMO is no small task, with Isleward already being in development for multiple years. Hopefully it will continue getting bigger and better.

Play free on the official site and itch.io, with the source code up on GitLab under the AGPL. You can also support the main developer on Patreon and follow it on Twitter if you like the sound of it.

It's actually quite fun already, even if simple.

Feels like Diablo with 3 classes (warrior, mage, archer), a hub and a lot of bashing and looting.
It has a Path of Exile skill trees, even if much simpler.
Also, it's a mmorpg, and right now there are about 20 players online.

FOSS, cross-platform, roguelike, MMO?!

That sounds amazing. At first glance it looks amazing!

Setting up your own server is trivial and it can play in a browser.

Hi there! Developer of Isleward here. Thanks so much for posting this.

To anyone playing, I'd advise them to use the direct link: https://play.isleward.com

The embedded player in itch works pretty well but certain hotkeys mess with the interface a bit.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. Isleward also works on mobile! It's available on the google play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xyz.appmaker.kzyuil and will be available on iOS in the near future too. It's literally just a webview with a tiny bit of extra logic (touch and gestures) and extra stylesheets.

Hi there bigbagdwaffle,
do you plan to release it via fDroid?
i would prefer that way more than the Playstore release.
