It's been a long time since a GamingOnLinux Podcast and we're coming back, with quite a different style to what we were doing before. Technically this is 'Episode 22'.

Unlike the short News Punch bursts I did solo last year, this is more of an audio-focused co-op cast with long-time GOL contributor and Linux livestreamer Samsai. Covering a range of topics, with plenty of nonsensical ranting it's more of a very chilled-out rough chat about things that we're going to be doing on a semi-regular basis. No exact schedule but hopefully it provides some interesting topics to get you thinking and chatting with others on too.

Note: the RSS feed addresses have changed. There's a redirect in place but I do suggest updating to be sure it keeps on pulling in any new stuff in case the redirect is ever removed. The RSS feeds have also now been updated for our newer article URLs - that may cause duplicates, hopefully not.

You can also follow it on YouTube and also Spotify.

Some of the topics covered include:

  • Microsoft buying ZeniMax
  • The Talos Principle and Streets of Rogue are awesome
  • Game preservation and open source
  • Game streaming - is it the future?

Good work on this one. Gave me something to listen to since the sound cut out (again!) on Civ:BE.

I honestly don't think Vulkan is all we have to worry about in terms of Microsoft's purchase of Zenimax, it's the general media consolidation in gaming. We've already seen it progressing in other entertainment and information fields (the vast bulk of films in theatres are owned by one company, for instance, so they get to dictate terms), and I really don't like seeing that in the game space. Granted it affects me less since I prefer stuff from smaller studios to AAA, but it still has an effect.

This the best episode so far, by far. I noticed its up on lbry too already: what do you guys use (and do) to have that audio oscillator graphic as video??

Hey, glad you like it! :)

For the actual video it was simply FFmpeg. No other special program was used. Here was the entire line I used for it in case anyone else is interested:

ffmpeg -y -i audio.mp3 -i background_picture.png -filter_complex "[0:a]showwaves=s=3840x200:mode=line:colors=red|yellow[sw];[1][sw]overlay=(W-w)/2:(H-h)/2:format=auto,format=yuv420p[v]" -map "[v]" -r 60 -map 0:a -movflags +faststart -acodec copy video.mp4

Will this episode also be available in ogg?
Because I have subrscibed to your podcast with the following rss feed: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/podcast_rss_ogg.php and the latest episode is missing there.

Hi, apologies for that. I've rewritten the RSS feeds now into one single file that just takes a "?format=xxx" tag which is now live. There's a redirect in place for the old feeds, it should all work fine now :)

Samsai seemed to claim that MS would force id to use DX12 only if they aimed at complete XBox exclusives.

But DX12 also works on Win10 – so unfortunately I think they might push for DX12 with the argument that then it works both on PCs (actually only on Win10, but that’s PC for them, isn’t it?) and on XBox. They don’t need to aim for exclusivity to go the DX path.

That would still be forcing that DirectX on a company that has never used DirectX in their existence. This would be a monumental waste of money that might even break id software. Not so sure that even microsoft would do that for a relatively small gain.

I’m afraid that works on XBox without porting or translation layer might be much more than ‘a relatively small gain’ in MS eyes. But we’ll see.

(Then of course… they could just allow Vulkan drivers on XBox to make it work without porting. But obviously they won’t.)

Thanks very much! I suppose there is also an equivalent on doing that same through GUI also, for new comers. For example on OpenShot or Kdenlive. I wonder if also that approach could be demonstrated some time

If you wanted to do something similar with a UI, you can do it with Kdenlive. Using the Audio Waveform Filter on the Master Effects https://imgur.com/a/yNDQ9kl

Thanks Liam and Samsai I really enjoyed the podcast. Reminded me of listening to Graham, Ben, Mike and Andrew from the linux format / voice days.

Looking forward to the next.

That still assumes Microsoft wants to interfere in id's business directly. I would like to point out that although id uses Vulkan, Xbox and PS ports of their games still get done, so Vulkan isn't seemingly a major hindrance to them at the moment in terms of console porting. That's why I feel they would only be forced off Vulkan if Microsoft wants to turn them into an Xbox exclusive.

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed these podcasts!

The new Co-Op format was fantastic. As the discussion focusing on game streaming played out, I felt an interesting and very informative synergy was created. Two heads are better than one!

Really looking forward to the Distro Podcast. This subject is something that I have grappling with the last couple months.
